help how does art work in the world in college and outside

hai so I decided I wanted to study art for a while now and my high school is lucky enough to have about 3 different art medium focuses with levels from 1 to AP in each (ceramics, studio art, and digital art) and ive taken studio and digital art 1 so far in both my freshman and current sophmore years, and plan on taking ceramics next year to try to figure out which branch i liked more and go from there.

however i dont really know whats expected of me in terms of portfolios; such as how old or recent the art work has to be or how many i need in them or what questions i'll be asked about each piece. or in how to really survive on art alone really after college or at least be able to live comfortably off of it and maybe another job, either full or part time idk yet

wondering if anyone has any idea what to do or if theres specific things i have to start now to be able to get more income or recognition later in life? or what general info i need to know to start building portfolios?

also im still figuring out how many colleges are actually dedicated in part or fully to art and stuff around the US and possibly abroad so if yall have any names i could look into itd be greatly appreciated

This may be a bit confundieron o a bit not well explained, bit im trying my best.

Okay for a new portafolio try for it to be recent art. No more than 3 years old (unless you feel it’s super good and you want to share older art) m. My friend is doing her portafolio focusing on character design bc that’s what she likes.

She divides the drawings in two mains: original characters and real people. After that she divided into the character/person. For example in real ppl she got: Alisson, Sara, Alan, Me. She uses my pictures as references.

In the Me section she uploads drawings and their reference. Like portrait, full body, half body, etc.

What you put in your portafolio goes according what you want to show. Like you want to show you are good at backgrounds. Divide the backgrounds in different categories and portrait them. Maybe find some inspo in other people portafolio

For gaining recognition try using social media, even though is hard you can make it. For that be active, upload for school work, try doing tiktoks/reels.

Another thing about portafolio, is try that your art explains themselves. What you want to portrait is shown. So mainly try ti find what you what people to see when they see your art. The way you impact the viewer is important.

To be honest i cannot recommend you an art university, im a computer science person. But when i was little i wanted to study art on Paris, ppl said it was a great place for studying art but expensive.

One last thing, surviving alone from art right after high school/university is gonna be hard. At first you’ll need a job. Unless you get recognition or a job offer duding university/college, it’s hard. Try having a backup plan
