It's finally here! I was afraid Unicorn: Warriors Eternal would be stuck in production, but boy, am I glad to be wrong!
!SPOILER WARNING!
Plot: Naturally these first two episodes were focused on introducing our cast of characters, mainly Emma and her struggle with Melinda in the first episode. The episode makes sure to establish Emma as different from the other two hosts for the souls of Seng and Edred, whose new bodies had less of an identity. The wedding scene was cute, and I really love Copernicus, the robot, as a character. It's nice to have a character that speaks through whistles and other noises rather than speech! Episode one was a great introduction to the Unicorn Warriors and the concept of magic. Episode two was more about Seng/Alfie and Edred, along with a reintroduction to the evil that the Unicorn Warriors are fighting. The action was pretty good, and it seems apparent that this may follow a monster of the week format with heavy continuity, but we'll see. Also, Winston died, dang. I'm curious how Melinda/Emma not remembering much will affect her growth, but I also wonder how she'll clash with Edred. Overall, these two episodes set the tone really well, though I wish they had made separate episodes for Seng and Edred, but oh well. This is a nice start!
Animation: Oh my gosh, I am in love with this art style! Many people have said it appears to be a combination of Popeye, Osamu Tezuka, and more. Considering the most recent Genndy property I've watched was Symbionic Titan, it's interesting to see the more inconsistent lineart in Unicorn compared to the cleaner lineart on Titan. I also adore the late 1800s steampunk realistic futurism aesthetic. However, there are some janky movements in some shots, and I'm not sure why this is. Was it budget? Time? Whatever it is, I hope it goes away, though there is plenty of good animation that minimizes some of the small issues I've found. Hopefully, the animation gets better as we progress through the series.
Music: Yes, the music stands out to me enough for me to comment on it lol. There were some pretty dramatic tracks within these two episodes. I don't have much to say, but I hope to hear more of this.
Symbiotic Titan's "Successor": So a lot of people have been making ties from Unicorn to Symbionic Titan. For those who didn't know, Symbionic Titan ran for two(?) seasons and ended on a cliffhanger before it was canceled. A lot of people say that Unicorn is Titan's successor, and I can see the similarities. Both skirt the PG rating with more serious and dramatic tones along with non-graphic violence. Both are also more aimed at teens, I believe. Also, both have robot characters, even if both play slightly different roles and only one speaks. Now, thankfully Unicorn shouldn't fall into the same trap as Titan. Though Simbionic Titan is amazing, and if you like Sci-fi animation, it's a must-watch! I hope to do a general review of Symbionic Titan since I watched it last summer.
Closing remarks: Overall, I'm hopeful for this series. If you want to watch it, the first episode is available on YouTube. The more we support the animation we want, the more of it we will get!
