How Media Literacy Can Save the Future

Wow uh...lot's of new people! Guess I should introduce myself!

(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

I'm Magdalen and I'm a Media Literacy Advocate and Consultant.

For the past five years or so, I've been watching and analyzing how media and social platforms have shaped our psychology and communities. It's done more damage than most people realize, on a personal scale all the way up to destabilizing whole ass nations.

Here's a story for you: remember back in the 1950s, when people didn't know cigarettes gave you cancer? And the cigarette companies knew... but they wouldn't tell people? Replace Marlboro with Facebook, and you've basically got our modern problem. We used these platforms, and have for years, without knowing their effects on us. Most of us started young. And now, years later, we're finally wising up. But it's hard to quit.

(ಥ﹏ಥ)
Okay, things are bad. How do we fix it?

Okay well... things are definitely bad. But they got this way because most of us use social media without really understanding how it works, why it works they way it does, and what effect it has on our brains. In short, most of us are media illiterate. And that's not a judgement! It's only the inevitable result of technology moving faster than our brain!

The only way forward is mass education about media. The more we know, the more we can make better, healthier decisions

I've dedicated a portion of my YouTube channel to teaching about media literacy and why it's important. And I'll try to post here about it as well. Questions are welcome!

Woo, this is amazing! I very much appreciate this and media literacy is super important. Coming from a background in the educational field (being a teacher, I mean), I now work in digital media so like, I am 1000% about this!

A very honorable initiative to take with your time and I applaud you.

I like to follow "alternative" media and have for years. One of my favorite independent journalists made a "Fake news awards of 2020" video that is well researched. I'd be really curious to hear your thoughts on it: https://www.bitchute.com/video/_EkWhDDoips/ (I forgive you if you don't watch the whole thing, it's quite long!)

Most people just read the headlines so socially they have an opinion. I believe that is a fatal mistake, removing critical thought from the whole process allows propaganda (What we should be calling it, not fake news) to spread rampantly.

Unfortunately, alternative media sources can be riddled with bias and swindlers looking to make a buck.

You'll find that the Corbett Report is rated extremely low for factual reporting. While they aren't classified as politically left or right, they promote climate change denialism, which goes against all modern science and is only held up by far right quackery. They also support themselves by selling subscriptions and DVDs, which encourages outlets to be sensationalist and divisive.

🌈 No disrespect intended of course! 🌈

Where did you find Corbett "rated extremely low for factual reporting"?

It's hard to say that about him when he's using evidence strait from the horses mouth (the accused caught red handed by their own omission, no way to dispute that.).

For example in the video regarding the PCR test: two "trusted fact checker" sources said: The inventor of the PCR test never said "it should not be used to diagnose infectious disease".

Then our man Corbett finds the damn clip of him (the inventor of PCR) FUCKING SAYING IT (TIME STAMP 18:38 in the video)!

Beware of who you consider the arbiters of truth because you'll find they also lie.

Media Bias Fact Check is a good standard and they're very transparent about where they get their funding. One of the most dangerous things about disinformation isn't that they lie to us, but they encourage us to think everything else is fake. The goal isn't to make you believe on thing or the other, but to erode your understanding of truth itself. Stay safe out there!
