this episode was decent. my expectations were very low, given the last episode.. i didn’t make a blog post for it because it was so awful i couldn’t finish it.
anyhow. this felt like a very classic trek episode in some aspects. i think it could have very easily been a voyager episode. as cool as the “we’re gonna liberate these miners from the klingons” plot was presented, the whole thing came off contrived. all the effort they went through and the final plan was essentially just “scare them off” which we already established wouldn’t work. the alien kid and trip only talked a couple times and we were meant to think they got super close. i could tell what it was trying to do at each point but it just fell flat.
i did like the target practice scene. malcolm looking at hoshi making all perfect shots and making a “when did she learn to do that?” face. i like that it called back to the previous scene in whatever episode it was when malcolm was teaching her to shoot. i’m kind of obsessed with the hoshi/travis/malcolm bestieship but the show only ever gives us crumbs so it mostly just exists in my head. plus i just like when hoshi gets screentime tbh
archer’s “i thought ‘i didn’t sign up for this’ but i stepped up when my crew was under attack” speech seemed more fitting to janeway. i think that’s where i’m getting the voyager vibes from. archer really doesn’t have a lot going for him character wise except for “sticking to his principles” which applies to all the captains, frankly. he isn’t special. they dedicate so much effort to making him a Cool Dude that he doesn’t feel human. maybe that’ll change in the future
