Guys I love this movie like a lot. Like a lot a lot! It's the first movie in years to shoot up my top 10 list. I'm not going to be pretensions and critique it at the college level and tell you it's the next "10 Angry Men". But I do not lie to people when it comes to the enjoyability factor. There's a lot I want to go over so I'm going to get the trigger list and spoiler free rating out of the way first. Please watch this movie and then come back when you're ready to just gush with me. I will also put the ccs/html code I used for this blog at the end of the review if you would like to use it for your own layout. Please note that you will have to play around with it as some of the coding is for blog specifically.
Spoiler Free Rating: 10/10 Would watch 100 more times
Trigger Warning:
Blood and Violence. It is also rated R so always check the ratings yourself as well.
Spoiler Review!!!! You Have Been Warned!
Acting: Man where do I begin? The best way to some up the acting would be the amazing chemistry everyone shares with each other throughout the film. With how tonally different all the characters are, I am pleasantly surprised with how naturally they all interact with each other. The two characters that shine the most, and has become a fan favorite amongst people who have seen this movie, would be Brian Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as "Lemon and "Tangerine".
They are delightful to watch as well as Brad Pitt as "Ladybug". While this is technically an ensemble cast, the focus is mainly on these three characters specifically. I am never bored with them or waiting for the scene to switch characters. Joey King plays one of the antagonists in this film, and she does a great job as a hate-able villain (in a good way).
The action in this film is also well directed. While the camera does move a lot, it isn't distracting like in Marvel films or action focused tv shows. We'll get to cinematography later but I believe it sit's just below John Wick as far as the action sequences go. The acting is one of the main things that really hold this movie up.
The Plot: As I said in the acting section it is an ensemble film with several plots going on. What I consider to be the A plot follows "Ladybug", "Tangerine", and "Lemon", as they try to complete their own jobs the were hired to do on the train. It's very simple, "Lemon" and "Tangerine are trying to get the case to the "White Death" (The main antagonist) while "Ladybug" is also trying to retrieve the case. Ladybug is trying to figure out why everyone is looking for the case. However the B plot is where most of the tea is. "The Prince" is trying to kill "The White Death" using a father named Yuichi to do the job for her. Buuut Yuichi's father happens to be an ex-Yakuza who worked for the same gang that "White Death" did before he betrayed the leader. Yuichi and his father wants revenge against "The Prince" and "White Death" for betraying their old gang and for pushing Yuichi's son off a roof. This is where it gets messy (in a gossip sort of way). "White Death wants everyone dead because of a chain of events that got his wife killed which connects our A and B plot. While we're focused on the A plot the B plot doesn't overstay it's welcome; instead it wraps the story up nicely in a little bow. The writing is simple and nothing to me overstays it's welcome.
Soundtrack: I love the music choices for this film. I have nothing more to say except listen to the soundtrack and licensed music choices. It all slaps.
The Japanese covers they have for "Staying Alive" and "I need a Hero" goes really hard.
The Cinematography: Excuse my language but I am a major slut for the camera and lighting work in this film. Just take a look at these gifs!
It's creative, fun, and thematically pleasing! This movie is so colorful and bright, it's like candy for the eyes. It makes use of the tight spaces of the train as well bringing us closer to the action and fight scenes. The camera never shakes or tries to hide the action from you. It's up close and personal with it, and that is something I greatly appreciate from my action films.
Tell me what you think about this movie in the comments below! Did you also enjoy this movie? What was your favorite part?
