Thinking about making a host

I have a spare Chromebook, I could install Linux on it and somehow use it as a web host. No idea how I’d do that, but I could. Somehow. I know how to get Linux on it, at least. But I think that fragments the storage into so many segments… IIRC the time I tested it it the largest portion was about 8GB. Which would work if I’m only hosting my own basic html/css and a few images. Neocities has been a bit laggy for editing. I can always host myself on localhost with NPM but then if anyone else wants to see it they’d need my IP address, lol. I know that’s how personal/business sites used to be, but that doesn’t quite work now.

Either way, before all this: I need to figure out what I want it to look like. I want it to be easily readable and navigated. I want it to have top and side navigation bars… but what colour? What style? Do I want to use background clip text fill? Alt text in GIF sparkle text images? Who knows. I’ll want to make a manifesto, I know that. And a biography, maybe some images of my setup. Or pixel art of it… I’m not the best at art in general but I can definitely try!

! Maybe I could even add a MIDI player if I have an actual web host… sometimes for my personal sites I just throw them on a drive and open the links through file:// and MIDI isn’t allowed to load from non HTTP sources/protocols. I guess this disk I put the code on myself isn't secure. But you never know, I guess.

If anyone has tips or experience in this, let me know! Also some places to get flash drives- I want to make a backup ChromeOS stick just in case haha.

Various questions I’ll need answered, either by my own research or through asking friends:

  • Which Linux distro?
  • How would I set up the Chromebook as a host?
  • How would I push changes?
  • GitHub or Codeberg, if I’m making it open source?
  • Put comments on what everything does, so really new newbies can see how some things work, or just on the more complicated things I’d need notes on? (I am still a newbie myself at this, haha)
  • Compressed/small JPGs of my work or pixel art PNGs/GIFs?
  • How much terminal knowledge would I need?
  • Is there a direct tutorial?
  • Which domain would I want?
  • Is it available? (Check Porkbun!)
  • Can a Chromebook even do much with the meagre resources it has, even if it’s in Linux?
  • How do subdomains work?
  • How do i make a drop-down list from the top that doesn’t push the content down
  • How to restart it as a server after power outages?

    Other things to note:

    • Income needed
    • —> How do I make a list indent on mobile
    • —> part time job openings/listings
    • —> commissions for basic layouts/organising things/finding things (probably for friends)
    • —> legality of income
    • —> what the FTP is income tax / how would I pay income tax if I’m self employed and it doesn’t just come out of a paycheque lol
    • —> do I have to pay income tax if I’m not “he or she”
    • idk if I want it to be a site for just me or also some close friends/groups
    • I know I wanted to put something here but I don’t remember what.
    • I have ADHD and might lose motivation entirely

you're best off hosting online or paying for a domain. i recommend self-hosting if you're doing something specific, but if its just a website i don't see why you need to dedicate a whole server to it. i use a NUC with linux mint + cinnamon to host a simple discord bot and it does the job pretty well, but nothing a hosting platform couldn't do.

additionally, were your site to recieve too many requests, a high performance server (such as that of neocities) will be able to handle it far better than your computer would. in short, you're at a greater risk of being DDoSed.

there are other circumstances you need to consider when self-hosting. you're in charge of website security which, if you're unfamiliar with, could pose as another risk.

overall, it seems like a bit of a stretch for something thats a very simple task

i also want to add- if you're unfamilar with linux as it is, i recommend you do a whole load of research about distros and DEs that will suit your needs best. otherwise, linux will be an utter headache for you

    sorry i forgot some questions
    3) while i cant officially recommend it but this is true if you get paid under the table for something like commissions etc you do not need to report it and from what i know it might be more of a pain to do so
