I saw "Evil Dead Rise" today in theaters, and I'm excited to give my review on it now for everyone who's thinking about going to see it and for those who already have. I will be providing a list of trigger warnings first, then my spoiler free review, than my spoiler review in that order. Please let me know in the comments what your favorite part was (Marked Spoilers)!
My overall score is 9/10
Trigger Warnings
-Gore: In Case you are unfamiliar with the Evil Dead franchise, one of the things it's most famous for is gore. This movie in particular has some pretty disgusting stuff. If ye be faint of heart, this movie ain't for you.
-Motherhood Themes: In case you haven't seen the trailer, (without getting too much into spoilers) the story surrounds a single mom, her kids, and her pregnant sister. While this isn't "Rosemarie's Baby" 2.0 or "Resident Evil 8" levels of traumatic pregnancies and parenthood themes, it is present. Be advised if that bothers you.
-Child Harm: I'm going to be very blunt. Kids get very hurt in this movie. 100% skip if you can't handle seeing children getting harmed in anyway.
-Possible Animal Death: I have good news for the animal lovers in the room! There is 1 cat in the movie. The cat doesn't die on screen, nor do we hear it in pain or dying. The cats body isn't in frame either to my memory. It is implied that it gets killed, buuuuuuut as long as you don't think about it, the cat is ok.
-Bugs: bugs are in the movie and it's gross
-Religion: Once again if you have never picked up an Evil Dead movie before, it's about demon possession. Religion isn't a big theme in this series, but it is a tool.
Spoiler Free Review
Not to sound like a pretensions Film nerd but, this movie is definitely one that you should watch in theatres. You can get the most out of your watching experience that way. I also want to give kudos to whoever was in charge of lighting, because my biggest pet peeve while watching a movie is when everything is so dark to the point that you can't see anything going on. I am so happy that I can actually see everything in this movie. Next I was worried going in since this is the age of reboot movies, coupled with the fact that this would be a more series entry compared to the campiness of the other entries.
I think the acting was decent, especially with the child actors. I think in some areas, when horror wasn't happening, it was flat for the adults, but all in all it's pretty solid.
Next! Lee Cronin did a really good job directing this film. He doesn't have an extensive filmography, but his main genre seems to be horror and I think he does great with the visuals of this film! He also wrote the film as well. I like the change in environment from the old cabin in the woods, to a small apartment building. It brings the horror closer to home.
finally for you classic Evil Dead fans, even though Bruce Cambell has hung up the character of Ashley Williams, he still has his hands on the franchise along side with Rob Tapert, and Sam Raimi as executive producers. While we may never see our favorite "Himbo Final Boi" in the film, know that it has his blessing.
Spoilers!
I really enjoyed this film and it makes me want to go back and watch the first one again. I'm not going to lie though, I haven't seen all of them or the tv show yet and I had no idea there were more than one Necronomicon books. So this information had be freaking out in a fanboy/girl way but also in a "Oh shit there's more than one Necronomicon to worry about?" There is in fact canonically four now. I also enjoyed the little homages to the original movies. I think my favorite part is when the records are playing. It's got all the right tension and build up the the emergence of the deadite. The record also shook the theatre (yaknow in a rumble sound way) and I could feel it in my core. The movie is also pretty gross to look at (in a good way!). I was eating M&M's when one of the daughters coughed up bugs and I had to put my bag down cause I didn't want to feel that kinda crunch in my mouth at the moment. It's definitely not a snack friendly movie.

Yes I know the format is a bit weird in the text. I was fighting it for about an hour or two -_-
This blog is very experimental too and I'm glad I could get it to mostly work
