The factory must grow.

4/16/2023

started playing this game called factorio the other day, it has been on my mind since hbomb mentioned it in one of his older videos (i have been binging all of his stuff the past couple.. somethings)

since it is expensive (by my standards, anyway.. 32€!) and doesn't go on sale, i elected to first try the demo instead of buying it on impulse right away -- as i usually do with games. i ended up caving to go buy it 8.8 hours into the demo, and then still finished the tutorial in the demo itself. that's 10.5 hours on the demo alone!

as many of the reviews say, it is.. very hard to put down. many liken it to hard drugs due to its addictiveness, lol. and though i only have a cumulative 19 hours at the moment, i can see the truth in those half-joking statements. it's easy to lose track of time or play for much longer than you intend to, and.. already, my sleep schedule is suffering from this. ha. oops.

this game also has a very good soundtrack, it's nice, atmospheric and relaxing. sometimes a bit spooky. i've been listening to it on repeat whilst working on an assignment right now (..last minute as per usual).

it is a game about.. automatization. you are building a factory, trying to make it do as many things for you as possible. it's been described as something of an amalgamation of puzzle, strategy and management as far as game genres go. there's also a survival aspect -- the reason you're doing this, after all, is you have landed (and become stranded) on an alien planet and you're trying to get back home. the wildlife is not a big fan of the pollution mass production brings. thus, you must also defend yourself and your creations.

the factory must grow.

this is not my usual type of game at all, i pretty much never play anything all that comparable to this. maybe only tangientally, if you count other games wherein you have to manage your resources and build your base, like minecraft or some such.

i like it quite a lot so far. there is also an extensive modding community, so the fun never has to end. it is a rather open-ended game, though there is a goal (to launch a rocket into space), the learning curve is never-ending + there are a variety of different scenarios/gamemodes you can play as well.

i like it.

oh, and it's the kind of game you'll see a ton of several thousand hour reviews for. most notably, there was one guy that's been playing since.. 2014? and had a cumulative 36k hours. for reference though, this game fully released only in 2020. by the sounds of it, it was very solid already in beta back in 2017 or so. and it is still being updated, actively!

if you couldn't tell, haha, whenever i get into a new game, something i like to do is read reviews for it on steam. i'll spend probably more time reading about others' experiences and reviews (as well as browsing mods, if there are any) than i do playing these games. it's fun.
