Concept of Monsters in The Magnus Archives //SPOILERS//

An important factor in The Magnus Archives that has been apparent since the beginning but only named in season 3 is the concept of Avatars. Avatars are not blue humanoid fish donkeys or people who can bend the four elements, they are Edritch Worshpers of Fear. These avatars seek out victims to feed their "Gods". Robert Smirke is credited for naming the God-like entities, The buried, the Behilding, the Wed, The desolation, The Spiral, The Corruption, The Slaughter, The Hunt, The stranger, The flesh, The vast, The Lonely, and The End. These thirteen names are arbitrary concepts outside human perception. There are multiple ways to become an Avart of one of these entities. There are non-organic relics that act as avatars, humans who go through trauma relating to a fear entity may become one, there are people who feel other world love for these concepts, some become an avatar out of profit or the benefit of immortality, and some come into existence as an Avatar. Avatars are primarily considered monsters for making people suffer for their own gain. The protagonist Jon (Archist) Starts by expressing his disbelief in the paranormal. Claiming to be a skeptic. As it goes on he shows not only his without a doubt belief in the paranormal and strange, but complete hatred and a desire to destroy all avatars. When he started to become an avatar of the beholding it was a combination of becoming what he hated and trying to survive. Huma n food no longer sustained him. He had to eat people's traumas. Going up to strangers and pulling out their deepest fears was a compulsion he couldn't control. In season five all the other "monsters" started treating him as the big boss after he was manipulated into becoming a vessel to go through with a ritual that would turn the world into a domain of fear and suffering. He never wanted any of this. Jon was a victim of so many people's schemes. This made him do bad things. Yet he's still seen as a non-human monster at the end. SImply another evil to be hunted and killed.
