fav movies (aka me rambling) [4/9/2023]

i love these movies so much.......

my own private idaho

directed by: gus van sant

release year: 1991

genres: drama, lgbt

GUYS. i'm never shutting up about this movie. it's so real and raw to me and i don't think i can live without this movie existing it's THAT good. i really really like the experimental style of the movie, it's weird but in such a good way. the costume design is also great; i love the outfits they put scott and mike in. this movie is eeeverything to me, the dialogue, the acting, the themes... and the campfire scene will always shatter me into a million pieces (if you never watch this movie, at LEAST watch the campfire scene).

everything everywhere all at once

directed by: the daniels (daniel kwan, daniel scheinert)

release year: 2022

genres: sci-fi, action

honestly i don't think i can watch this movie without crying. it's so personal to me as an asian american, and evelyn wang just reminds me so much of my mom. the colors, the style, the seriousness expressed through silliness, i love every aspect of this movie. it's probably one of the best multiverse movies ever, and the way it portrays generational trauma is so so good. it really does live up to its name by being such a rollercoaster of emotions. i think everyone in the entire world should watch this movie at least once in their life.

the thing

directed by: john carpenter

release year: 1982

genres: sci-fi, horror

ah yes the movie that inspired among us. jokes aside, this movie is excellent at creating tension and mystery. even on a rewatch (and i've watched this movie 3 times in this year alone..), it's still as eerie as the first time. this is definitely john carpenter's masterpiece, and he'll never be able to top it again. for having a wide ensemble of characters, it manages to stay very cohesive. also can we take a moment to appreciate THE PRACTICAL EFFECTS??? they were so gross and awesome, i wish movies went back to using them.

whiplash

directed by: damien chazelle

release year: 2014

genre: drama

i'm actually so obsessed with this movie right now. what drew me in was the concept of the movie: a jazz drummer who basically goes insane trying to prove he's a good drummer to an asshole band director. guys i'm not even joking when i say this movie is CRAZY. the way tension builds up is amazing, and it's really fascinating to see the journey the main character, andrew, goes through. the ending is one of the best endings to a movie i've EVER seen. this one started out as a short film, and that version is also wonderful. i suggest watching it (it's only 18 min long).

rushmore

directed by: wes anderson

release year: 1998

genre: comedy, drama

of course i have a wes anderson film on my favorite movies list... it's not the grand budapest hotel, though! i love that movie, but rushmore is just my personal favorite of his. i just like the silly plot and the way the characters are written in this! wes anderson's distinct style hadn't been developed yet since it was one of his first films, but i think it's still pretty good. what he excels at in his storytelling is the relationships between his characters. i loved max and herman's dynamic and the goofy shenanigans they got up to. also, the acting was amazing!
