ts name comes from the English words ocean (ocean), shell (shell) and otter (otter).

Mijumaru can be a combination of 水mizu (water) or 未熟mijuku (naive or immature) and 丸maru (round; a common suffix in Japanese masculine names). According to Ken Sugimori , the staff wanted to have a typical Japanese name for Oshawott, hence the maru suffix. Miju may also refer to an otter named Mijbil , the character in an autobiographical novel and film called Ring of Bright Water .

Its French name, Moustillon, comes from moussaillon (boy) and mustélidé (mustélid).

In their edged shell attack , the Oshawotts wield their shell transforming it into a water katana.

Oshawott is based on a bipedal otter , as well as ancient Japanese samurai . This is revealed by Ken Sugimori in an interview: "I was worried for a while, until I went to an aquarium to examine the otters. There I saw a sea lion, and I noticed its tremendous power. Well, we tried to mix an otter marine with a sea lion. I came up with the idea of having Oshawott's scallop transform into a sword ( katana ) that he would use in combat, both himself and his evolution.".

Oshawott has a large, white, spherical head, with small, dark blue, conical ears. Oshawott's eyes are large, dark, and ovoid in shape. Her nose is brown with an oval shape. Oshawott also has spots on the sides of its face, referencing the short wattles that young otters have. She also has a strange necklace around her neck, reminiscent of small bubbles. Oshawott's torso is light blue in color and has some kind of adhesive that keeps his pale yellow scallop glued to the center. This scallop can be removed and is used with the versatility of a sword. Its small rounded arms are white, and its feet, which, unlike its arms, are dark blue, the same as its ears and tail. Oshawott also has a long, flat tail, which allows it to swim faster. He usually swims on his back, using only his hind legs and tail.

It fights with the scallop on its belly, using it to block attacks and then counterattack. This scallop is made of the same material as its claws and regenerates if broken. Oshawott also uses this scallop to cut berries that are too hard.
