the significance of names in thg

hi my name is kyle and i have a hunger games hyperfixation and since there is currently a renaissance of the hunger games on tiktok at the minute i've decided to share some of the cool meanings behind the names within the hunger games to show that names can have meaning behind them [cough cough cho chang]ヽ(・∀・)ノ


panem means 'bread' in latin. in the roman empire they instituted a policy called 'panem et circuses' [bread and circuses] which basically meant that if you kept the people fed and entertained that they would not pay attention to the corruption of the power plays amongst the political leadership

peeta a soft, round bread in hebrew, peeta's name being bread links to the 'panem et circuses' and how peeta was able to manipulate the people of the capitol so easily 

coriolanus [snow] named after gaius marcius coriolanus, a brutal roman general who got into politics but was so unpopular that he was eventually deposed of, he was exiled from rome but led enemy troops to the city to beseige it. shakespeare depicted him as someome that sided with the wealthy aristocrats against the common people [capitol vs the districts]

cinna a character in 'julius caeser' by shakespeare, an artist who was mistaken for a politician of the same name who was believed to be involved in the assassination of caeser. cinna was killed by a mob as he was seen as a traitor to the roman empire

cato a roman senator known for his conservatism and military service

seneca [the first gamesmaker] a roman statesman who was a favourite of emporer nero but after he was unfairly linked to an assassination plot against nero, seneca was ordered to commit suicide via poisoning [seneca crane and the nightlock berries]

rue a medicinal herbbut may also link to 'rue the day' meaning that the capitol will regret having her die as it leads to their downfall

katniss an edible plant found in the genus sagittarion which was named after the constellation sagittarius which is commonly known as the archer

plutarch [gamesmaker] greek philosopher who organised the pythian games

castor and pollux twin brothers in roman and greek mythology, castor was a mortal and pollus was immortal. also the names of the twins in the gemini constellation. in the hunger games castor dies whilst pollux lives
