if you're a teenager reading this: do not share personal info online. never share your exact age, your triggers (SERIOUSLY), and NEVER share anything that could allow people to find out your location. this includes photos or names of ANYTHING in your area. PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET ARE NEVER WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE. even if you don't think the person you're talking to would use this information against you, you never know who else could find and access that info. if you're not sure if something counts as personal info, be on the safe side and don't share it. with anyone.
anyway... seeing every other thread on the forums being like "13-17 chat!" "i'm 14 years old add me!" is honestly fucking terrifying, the newest wave of kids on the internet were never properly taught about online safety and it just gives me this horrible sinking feeling in my stomach man. i can't be the only one who's bothered by this right? and god forbid you try to teach them because then you're a "creepy adult" even though the real predatory adults are probably right there in those same threads with them, lying about their age and telling them not to listen to the people genuinely concerned about their safety... it's not their fault, it's their parents and teachers who decided that computer classes weren't necessary anymore because "oh every kid just magically knows how to use the internet now anyway." computer illiteracy among young people is literally at an all time high because of this... i feel incredibly lucky that i was among like the last wave of kids who even got computer class in elementary school.
anyone else remember when it was absolutely unheard of to even use your real first name online?? now we have people publicly listing all the ways you can give them a fucking panic attack on their profiles where anyone on the world wide web can find it. thankfully i haven't really seen that here yet but it seems very prevalent on twitter and tiktok. man it is seriously easier than ever for people to get abused and harassed now, both online and in the real world. it just sucks. if nothing else i do think that gravitating away from mainstream social media is a good sign.
