Theriotype Post - Maned Wolves

Hey, so I'm a therian and I wanted to make a post talking about my theriotype; the maned wolf!

General

The maned wolf is known by many names! The maned wolf, fox on stilts, crin wolf, and skunk wolf- the list goes on. Crin means animal hair in Latin, and that's where I got my name from! Now, the maned wolf may look like a fox or a wolf but it is neither. It is a canine from South America that is the only species in its genus, Chrysocyon (meaning "golden dog"). It's more closely related to the bush dog.

Description

Standing at 3 feet tall, the maned wolf is the tallest canine species. Its ears alone are 7 inches! Its fur is a reddish-orange along with whiter undersides and tail tip. They have a black bib on their chest as well as a black mane. This mane becomes more erect when threatened or excited.

Habitat

The maned wolf is found in areas like Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay, which means it lives in grasslands. Its long legs allow it to see over the tall grasses. The biggest problem this species faces is habitat loss and diseases spread by domestic dogs.

Lifestyle

These creatures awaken during dawn and dusk but can be more active on gloomier days. These canines are solitary and rarely interact with each other. Mated pairs may share a territory. When born, maned wolves are black and spend the first year of their life relying on their parents for food. At one year of age, they are full grown.
They are very timid in the presence of humans and pose no threat to us or our livestock. As far as vocalization goes, maned wolves don't make very many sounds. They can make a loud bark known as a roar bark, whine, and growl.

Diet

Maned wolves are omnivores! Something deemed the wolf apple is very popular among these long-legged canines. It feeds on a variety of little creatures like rabbits, rodents, reptiles, fish, and insects. Most of its diet consists of vegetable matter. It has a very varied diet! 116 plants and 178 animal species have been listed as prey items for the maned wolf.

Fun Facts!

-Did you know fossils of the maned wolf can be found back as early as the late Pleistocene?
-The maned wolf's urine smells like cannabis. This led to an incident at the Rotterdam Zoo which lead police on a hunt for some stoners but, alas, it was just our silly little maned wolf.
-The maned wolf has many positive relationships. It scatters the seeds of the Wolf Apple when it defecates. Leafcutter ants usually use this to feed their fungus gardens.

so yeah I am the real maned wolf and next time you see one think of me <3
