So I just recently found out last night that "Silver Springs" has once again made another resurgence because of 'Daisy Jones and The Six'. I read an article about it last night and it said that one of the songs in the show gives Silver Springs vibes because of the characters Daisy and Billy being based off Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham along with their relationship, and everyone is looking back at the 1997 performance of the song from their reunion show and album The Dance. I think it's amazing that people are going back and discovering and listening this song for the first time and re listening to it because it is such a wonderful song and an underrated Fleetwood Mac gem.
We're gonna go back to the beginning here. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974 and were a couple during this time. They met during her senior year of high school and joined his band Fritz. They would later on become a duo, and releasing an album together under the name Buckingham Nicks. Mick Fleetwood heard "Frozen Love", one of the songs from the album, and offered them to join Fleetwood Mac. The band's 1975 self-titled album was the first to include Stevie and Lindsey in the band's lineup. The album would have the hit Stevie Nicks written tracks "Rhiannon" and "Landslide".
Now during the making of the iconic 'Rumours' album, their relationship ended, and the two would write songs about their relationship, "Dreams" and "Go Your Own Way" just to name a couple. "Silver Springs" was recorded during the making of the 'Rumours' album and was scheduled to appear on the record, but was later taken out and replaced with "I Don't Want To Know" and was used as the b-side to "Go Your Own Way". This is another one of the songs that was written about their relationship. Written by Stevie herself, this is basically her telling Lindsey that she is upset with him and that he hopes that when he hears her on the radio for the rest of his life that it'll really bother him. You can tell because when you watch the clip of the band performing it during The Dance concert in 1997, Stevie is literally fiercely staring Lindsey down while they're singing.
This song has always been one of my favorite Fleetwood Mac songs. When you listen to it, you can hear the anger in Stevie's voice as she sings, and you know who she's singing about once you look into the backstory of the song. The 1997 live recording is also one of my favorite versions of the song along with the rough sessions/outtakes version from the 2004 deluxe edition of 'Rumours'. This is one of Fleetwood Mac's greatest songs, along with many others, and I do recommend giving it a listen. Again, I am really glad that this song has made another resurgence and that more people are discovering it. And another thing, they should've kept this song on the 'Rumours' album.
