Just wanted to make a post about some personal fashion notes I made via cartoon character outfit design.
When I say “dressing like a cartoon character”, I mean dressing simply, and with some general theme in mind. If you could draw your outfit in a minute or two, I’d call that relatively simple and minimalist.
Colors: Colors are super important in a fit, and to keep things simple, setting a color palette with a handful of hues is key. I was set on blue yellow and green, but I don’t think yellow’s my color anymore, so I may change my palette to blue green, and purple instead. However, purple clothing appears to be pretty rare, and if I ever find any, either the shade is too loud, or it’s some ugly desaturated purple. For the sake of comfort, including black/white and neutrals to mix and match. Black is best for colder months, white for warmer months, and brown and gray work all year round.
Patterns/shapes: A lot of cartoon characters wear simple patterns, the most notable being thick stripes or one-stripe shirts. Raglan tees are also super simple, and any shirt or top with a simple shape such as a heart, star, or is too, along with numbers and symbols (like a peace sign).
Accessories: If you want an accessory, have a consistent one! Typically a character always wears glasses, a hat, or always wears some type of tie. Usually, only one accessory is needed, and use it to highlight or draw attention to a body part or area of yours that may go overlooked.
Fit/Position: This one is less cartoon character inspired, but the fit of clothing can create different silhouettes for your body shape. I’m pretty long-waisted, so high-waisted bottoms with a crop top typically look good. Tight-fitting tops pair best with flared bottoms to draw attention away from my longer torso. This is something that one would have to study for themselves but could help with presenting your body in a more flattering way.
Frequency/Few pieces/Replication: Cartoon characters typically wear the same outfit each episode (unless you’re Ilana from Symbiotic Titan lol). Obviously, no one needs to have only one outfit and multiple copies of it, but limiting yourself to about 25 pieces with a color palette in mind allows for some experimentation and fun.
