Lyric analysis: “(Coffee’s For Closers)” - Fall out boy 1 of 2

Coffee’s For Closers lyric dissection

(1 of 2) 🎸🎶

Ok so let me start this off with that this is my personal interpretation!! I’m gonna make a part two of this with another meaning to the song in the future as it can be interpreted 1 of 2 ways!! In this blog however, I’m going to share my opinion of the lyrics of this song. I know fob themselves have said somewhere in the past that the lyrics were of a political sense. However I think they could also represent a different situation As well as what they’ve stated. I’m going to type out all the lyrics and color code them here to make this easier for everyone. Again this is my interpretation: it may not agree with yours or be correct but I just figured I’d share :)

“I can’t explain a thing

I want everything

To change or stay the same on top

Doesn’t care about anyone or anything

Now come together, come apart

Only get lonely when you read the charts

Oh baby, when they made me

They broke the mold

Girls used to follow me around

when I got cold

Throw your cameras in the air

And wave ‘em like you just don’t care

I will never believe in anything again

I will never believe in anything again

Oh change will come

change will come

I will never believe in anything again

We will never believe again

Kick drum beating in my chest again

Oh we will never believe again

Preach electric to a microphone stand

Oh, i’m a mascot for what you’ve become

And oh, oh, I love the mayhem more than the love

And oh baby when they made me

They broke the mold

Girls used to follow me around

when I got cold

Throw your cameras in the air

And wave ‘em like you just don’t care

I will never believe in anything again

I will never believe in anything again

Oh change will come

Change will come

I will never believe in anything again

We will never believe again kick drum beating in my chest again

Oh we will never believe again

Preach electric to the microphone stand

Oh throw your cameras as in the air

And wave ‘em ‘cause I just don’t care

(Chorus just repeats :D)

My personal interpretation and take on this song, is not of the political sense, but yet of the sense of a failed relationship (platonic or romantic).

The lines “I can’t explain a thing. I want everything,” To change and stay the same on top. Doesn’t care about anyone anything.” I think represents someone upset but the actions or words from a lover or friend. I think the speaker also signifies stress and heartache when saying they can’t explain a thing.

“Now come together. Come apart. Only got lonely when you read the charts,”  I think these lines signify the beginning & ending of a relationship. “Only get lonely when you read the charts” shows that one person only realizes what they’ve lost or done when the come to face it or look at the problem.

“Oh baby when they made me, the broke the mold,” This line definitely represents the same meaning as ‘nobody is perfect’ but the singer may also be indicating that he, himself, was never perfected to begin with and is far from perfect

“Throw your camera’s in the air, and wave them like you just don’t care,” could represent the other person in this failing relationship (platonic or romantic) pretending like they don’t care or notice the pain or hurt they’ve inflicted on the other reciprocate. You could also interpret this as: say all the harsh words you’d like and pretend like you don’t care or that it doesn’t bother you, but I know you know I’m hurting.

“Kick drum beating in my chest again,” may symbolize one’s heart pounding in their chest. Usually this may occur when a person is worried or stressed or angry.

“Preach electric to a microphone stand,” I think symbolizes coming to a realization and speaking out to that person on your feelings or thoughts. And as a result you preach your side and your thoughts to that person to listen to.

“Oh change will come,” is repeated twice when spoken. The first time almost is sounding like the singer is hurt and is warming you. And the second time it’s repeated almost like “change. Will. Come.” The singer now sounds angry and is warning you that whether you like it or not, change is and always will be approaching you. Also I find this line very ironic to a line in the album ‘infinity on high’ which was released before the one this song is on. The line I am speaking of states that “seasons change but people don’t”. I think it’s ironic because before it’s saying people will not change and now it’s as if they’ve learned their lesson.

“I will never believe in anything again,” the singer sounds heartbroken, also lyrics go from”I will never believe..” to “WE will never believe..” which makes me think they’ve gone from upset to angry and won’t ever feel the way they once did.

“Oh I’m a mascot for what you’ve become,” (this is my favorite lyric lolol) I think the singer is saying that their the face of the other person’s actions, almost like that when people talk of the situation they think of the singer as the person responsible for the other reciprocate actions.

“Wave ‘em like you..” turns into “wave em cause I just don’t care”, I think the singer looses hope and stops caring, they‘ve become angry and it’s overtaken the hurt. Singer knows they’re not and never were at fault.

All in all, I think this song symbolizes the end of a relationship (platonic or romantic) and the listener hears the speaker go from hurt to angry. I think the speaker starts off hurt by the other persons actions and change and warns the listener that change is inevitable. The singer then gets angered by the blame put on them by others.

Coffee is a great songs and remains one of my favorites. Lmk ur thoughts !! :-)

i love your analysis. it’s not something i’ve much considered, and this was also one of my most favourite fob songs at 14. i never put much thought into why i was so drawn to the song or anything on Folie in general back then, i just knew the music was sad and someday, it may click for me. i’m really happy there are so many young fob fans who take it all in differently. i love how popular they are, and how their popularity always grows especially with young people!!! 🖤
