daisy jones & the six brainrot - differences from book to tv show

welcome everyone to... me discussing djats!!

if you don't know what daisy jones & the six is, it started out as a book by taylor jenkins reid and was adapted into a tv show that came out earlier in the month. the book follows a fictional rock band from the 70s - all their adventures, struggles, etc... there's romance, (possible tw) drugs, sex, and, well... rock n roll. it's basically a fleetwood mac DUUUUUUPE, but it's an AMAZING one.

now, i have a LOT of thoughts about this topic, but let's focus on the differences in the tv adaptation first.

THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS!! if you're planning on watching the show or reading the book, DO NOT continue reading this blog post!! even tho you probably should've read / watched by now... but i'll keep my mouth shut.

first of all, they changed some characters' last names and backstories. now, these weren't the most major changes in the show, and they honestly didn't bother me so much. they changed eddie's last name from loving to roundtree, warren's from rhodes to rojas. it makes sense the more i think about it - eddie doesn't have a brother in the show like he does in the book, so maybe that was a good enough reason to change his last name? as for warren, the actor who plays him, sebastian chacon, is both colombian and ecuadorian, so having his last name be rojas instead makes a lot of sense. when it comes to the backstories, the only one they really changed was chuck's, aka the guy who starts as the bassist for the band and then ends up leaving to fight in the vietnam war. in the show, he leaves the band to go to college and become a dentist. like... okay, loser. also, they gave chuck the loving last name, which kinda bothers me since he's so irrelevant. why couldn't eddie still be eddie loving? maybe it just contradicts his character too much - he is a little whiny bitch in the book, but in the show, he's slightly different. still sometimes whiny and a douche, but kinda funny, too??

the next change was billy and camila's meeting scene, which also wasn't a huge deal. instead of meeting at a wedding billy was performing at, they met at a laundromat. still cute. i love them even though they are extremely heartbreaking. every couple in this book / show is no good for each other except warren and his movie star lover, lisa.

i'm not gonna sit here and pick out every single change because that would be exhausting and would take up toooooo much time. but i'll point out the major ones, or the ones i found most shocking.

the thing they changed the most was billy and daisy's dynamic with one another. in the book, they are ENEMIES. billy hates daisy from the moment he meets her. sure, he ends up realizing that he has feelings for her, but he stays with his wifey camila because she's who he loved first and ultimately who he loves more. i mean, they have kids together. their relationship may not have been the healthiest for a while, but he changed himself for her. he got his shit together for her. she made him do it. she is his strength, honestly. where would billy dunne be without his camila? in the show, however, they make billy hate daisy for about a second before he starts caring for her. like, he hates her during their first recording session and a little bit during their first writing session together, but he starts smiling at her and acting all caring towards her almost IMMEDIATELY. they make him act extremely shitty towards camila, treating her like an option or afterthought. he stays in the studio for hours with daisy and even speaks to her on the phone after hours. hell, he writes a song PLEADING daisy to stop having such an effect on him because he's married and has a family. this man is SHIT in the tv show. he was much better in the book - much more complex. in the book, i had a love-hate relationship with him. in the show, i just fuckin' hated him. billy and daisy kiss once in the book that we know of. in the show, they kiss MULTIPLE TIMES, and once is a makeout session that almost escalates. well, it kinda does, but in a different way than expected. billy does not turn back to his alcoholism or drug use in the book - in the show, his STRONG ASS FEELINGS FOR DAISY make him turn back to it at one point during the makeout session. he believes they're both "broken" and that that's how he's meant to be. like... NO! y'all are not good for each other!! even daisy realizes it, and she loves the man!! camila literally almost leaves billy because of what he's developing with daisy, and it's just a mess. they kinda fucked camila's character up a bit in the show, but i still love that woman. my babygirl fr. i mean, she was supposed to stick by billy through everything, and she does, but... she's much more emotional about the entire situation than she is in the book. the situation also isn't addressed as much in the book, or isn't as severe, so... i guess it kinda makes sense. in the book, though, she's this powerhouse of a woman - so independent and headstrong. she's still similar in the show, just... watered down. a lot. then again, so are billy and daisy, because their addictions are depicted way differently and they aren't as complex - you just hate them. well, i hate them. may just be my opinion.

the other major change that i feel is necessary to discuss is the entire camila and eddie dynamic in the show. in the book, camila and eddie have, like... no relationship. in the show, it is mentioned by eddie that he has known camila since they were children and they used to walk to sunday school together. he also alludes to the fact that he is in love with her, and has been for a while, though he doesn't outright say it pretty much ever. he says that "you couldn't help but fall in love with her" and says a lot of stuff about billy being lucky and not being able to see it because of his STUPID ASS PROBLEMS WITH LOVING OTHER WOMEN. at one point in the show, camila has HAD IT with billy's shit. she is DONE... or DUNNE. get it? that's billy's last name? okay, anyway, she goes out one night after billy gets home from the studio and goes to a bar. she sees eddie there with a girl, and he approaches her to ask what she's doing there and if she's okay. she tells him she is, but she's definitely fuckin' not. then, she tells him to go back to the girl he is with and that she's fine staying alone. eddie, however, isn't having that. he goes back to the girl, probably tells her to fuck off, and then goes back to camila. the girl calls him an asshole as she leaves, and camila asks him if he would really choose her over a girl like that. he says, and i quote, "i'd choose you over everyone." you see camila think about something and then glance at eddie's lips... and then you see her in her car coming back to her house, fixing her makeup in the mirror before she walks inside. there is visible guilt in her expression in the car and as she walks inside and tells billy that she was "just having dinner with a friend." GIRL. WE KNOW YOU FUCKED HIM. YOUR HAIR IS MESSED UP STILL. the next day or so, billy walks into the studio and sees eddie, says hi, and then eddie RUNS out of the studio. sooooo... they fucked. anyway, later on, the band is going on tour for their first album with daisy and camila is saying goodbye to everyone. her and eddie see one another, smile slightly, and then she brushes right past him. no goodbye for eddie. boohoo. during a part of the tour, camila comes to see billy, and a party is being held while she is there. she goes outside to get air and sees eddie out on the balcony. they have a little conversation despite camila saying they don't need to talk about anything, where eddie asks her why their little hookup happened. she says he has always been there for her and she was hurt and basically just used him, because then she says it'll never happen again. eddie looks DEFEATED. he is so sad. and that is when i thought, "maybe i get him." he comes back into the party and sits down all depressed and shit. poor fuckin' dude. later, camila comes back to see the band again for the end of the tour. she realizes billy and daisy have something more than what she thought, and in a heated argument with billy, says that they've both done things. when billy asks her what she's done, she gives him no answer. then, later on, eddie and billy get into an argument, where billy says that eddie is not good enough to be anything more than a bassist and would be nothing without him. eddie says to billy "if only you knew," to which billy says, "what don't i know?" then, eddie says possibly one of the most fuckin' amazing things to ever come out of his mouth. he leans into billy and whispers, "use your imagination." BILLY FUCKIN' PUNCHES HIM... BUT THEN, EDDIE FUCKIN' SHOVES HIM. eddie does get a black eye, but it looks good, so it's fine. at first, i absolutely HATED the idea of camila and eddie because i am a billy and camila truther thanks to the book. however, seeing how billy treated camila in the later episodes and how he was acting with daisy made me realize that she was kinda right to cheat on him. plus, camila and eddie are both attractive as fuck and they have a connection and trust in each other that was established prior to the events of the tv show. sooooooo... kinda justified. camila is a girlboss. she is my babygirl. eddie, i get you. you were a dick in the book, but you were more of an icon in the show. you slay. i love you.

i think that's all i should touch on in this post, but i'm really passionate about this topic if you couldn't tell, so there will definitely be more. stay tuned. love you all. xoxo.
