Lyric: Is it love for pain or lack of a brain? All I know is that I'm going insane

Mood: happy

Stressed about registration on Wednesday. They really give us 0 info on it and it makes me anxioussssss but I'm sure it'll be. Fine.

Will has been talking about summer and I... I might go see him over the summer but it could only be for like a week really. Summer is three months long. What the fuck am I gonna do without him. He said he'll call me all the time but he said that over winter break and then we got in a loop of neither of us wanting to "bother" the other.

I told Will that I've never seen a live action Tom Hanks movie (like I've seen Toy Story and the Polar Express but Idk what Tom Hanks actually looks like lol) so we watched Forrest Gump and Cast Away and oh my god. Sad. Good movies, uplifting, but also so sad dude. So sad.

Ofc because I'm me, I immediately thought of Green Arrow while watching Cast Away. Like...that movie is so much like his backstory. I'm certain they drew at least a little inspiration for the show Arrow. Somehow I doubt the movie drew inspiration from the comic character but I mean maybe.

I think it's interesting the way (DC at least) superheroes tend to all have like...trauma. Like something awful happened to them that made them want to save lives. I think Batman is honestly one of the best representations of some more stigmatized mental illnesses that I've seen in modern media. He's blatantly represented to have delusions, hallucinations, etc. It isn't always handled gracefully ngl (especially by other characters) but sometimes it is and ultimately...he's still a good guy. Just having a good character with those mental health issues is something I've very rarely seen.

It's kind of weird what heroes have sidekicks and what ones...don't. Batman always says he "works alone" and yet if you asked anyone on the street they'd say his sidekick is Robin. Maybe Batgirl. Fans might say Orphan, Bluebird, Signal, etc etc etc.

But has Superman ever had a real sidekick? If you asked anyone they'd probably say, "Superman? Gosh I don't know." He has Superboy but like...do they really work together that much? Superboy is much more often on his own, like in Young Justice where he's not even accepted by Superman or in Super Sons where Damian and Jon work together instead of with their dads. Superman has Krypto but I mean...no one says Ace is Batman's sidekick. I'd honestly argue that Superman has teamed up with Robin more than any of his own sidekicks.

People argue that Superman doesn't need a sidekick because he's so powerful but I'm not sure that's it. I think there's a case to be made for how Robin is the light to Batman's dark and Clark...well...Clark is his own light. But I honestly think in some of the recent comics, they've been taking Clark a lot darker. I could make a whole separate rant about that. I think maybe more so it's an inherent separation between Clark and others. Not because he's Kryptonian (his kids are technically half Kryptonian as well) but because he keeps people at a distance. I think he grew up knowing he was a lot stronger than everyone around him and it made him terrified to hurt the people he loves if he lets them too close to him. I think that fear became more metaphorical than purely physical (since his kids have his powers).

As much as Bruce is his own worst enemy, I think he desperately wants help. He wants people close to him. He may insist that he's a lone wolf and he's fine on his own but he cultivated this massive family to help him because the truth is? He can't stand to be alone. Meanwhile, Clark is much more outgoing and charismatic. But he's terrified to let anyone close to him.

Anyway rant over, I love DC superheroes so fucking much but you all already knew that.
