The Sub-Culture of Spacehey: reject modernity embrace :3

Spacehey: Reject Modernity Embrace :3

Spacehey has been my only medium and outlet in the internet world as of recently. My hate for social media has made me delete all everything and come here. And what I've seen from the coders, artists, writers and bloggers have been amazing.

Spacehey obviously is inspired by Myspace. an iconic early 2000s social media. The Dev An heard his older friends talk about how great Myspace was back then. This then made them realize a social media like Old Myspace did not exist. and with the spare time during the pandemic An developed Spacehey. Using photos, videos, and archived webpages from Myspace to make it as accurate as they can. surprisingly An has never really used the original Myspace. hence why he needed so many reference materials. and from there people made articles, tiktoks, and videos and brought us to around 600,000 users. (1/3rd of those users being layout coders' test accounts)

A Chat With a Spacehey User

         Karacen                       Freddy!!!!

After making a post for users willing to interview I got alot of people. I'll hightlight two users though. Karacen an active blogger and Freddy a spacehey artist.

Freddy!!!-artist

Bug: How did you find out about spacehey?

Freddy:well I remember I was at school and my friends were on it- I hadn't seen it OR heard of it before but they got me to join it so we could all be on it together and I coded it at home n stuff

Bug: Have you ever used Myspace?

Freddy:Nope-I had heard of it but I never used it

Bug: What drew you into the site?

Freddy:Well I really liked how everything was layed out- how pages were customizable and I also really liked blog options. Usually when I write text it ends up being super long and I don't have enough space when typing on other platforms. It's really free in the sense you can do a LOT of things like post dozens of images, gifs and long walls of text without much of a limit. Plus how you can code and customize what you want. Not only that but a lot of the people I've met here have been super nice

Bug: Did you come here as a rejection of what modern social media has become?

Freddy: it wasn't an immediate decision when I first got onto it since I joined to meet up with friends on there but it... sort of is? I did join not too long after leaving most other social medias for its own reasons and this is way better than any of those- plus ive always been a fan of older internet stuff and history

Bug: What type of blog posts do you make?

Freddy: mostly art blogs- I don't really post much else

Keracen-blogger

Bug: How did you find out about spacehey?

Keracen:"I found it in TikTok comments when someone was complaining about myspace being lame now Someone recommended Spacehey to the poster and I had been interested in myspace so I checked it out"

Bug: Have you ever used MySpace?

Keracen:" I wasn't alive when it was like Spacehey is today, but I have checked out what it's become. It's lame. Its just music and old people.

Bug: Did you come here as a sort of rejection of what modern social media has become?

Keracen: Yeah, you could say that. I still enjoy using Snapchat and TikTok but this is a lot less stressful, i guess? Plus I've always wanted to experience the 90's/2000's and this is like a little window into that world.

Bug: What sub-culture do you associate with here?

Keracen: Uh. LGBT and neurodivergent?? Is that a sub culture-? That's who I tend to talk to at least.

Bug:What type of blog posts do you make?

Keracen: Pretty much whatevers on my mind, lately I've been talking about my friends/my crush a lot. Also about stuff that interests me, like games i like. I haven't done much of that specifically but like. I will at some point

Reflection

I think It's pretty interesting that Freddy and Karacen had never used Myspace and every other person I had interviewed. It seems that most are using it to see into a time they had never seen. I even fall into that category. The old internet looks far more fun and expressive rather than how bland its become. Kara does bring up the very large and active neurodivergent and lgbtq community here. Yknow the gays and ADHD is not hard at all to find here. You know Pwouty hates to see it. Again another example of the LGBTQ community here Hate posts from Transphobe Pwouty have been rightfully shut down by Allies and members of the community. but Pwouty has Aspergers so its like a civil war or something.... ANYWAYS Freddy talks about one of the most unique aspect of Spacehey

The Coders and Layout Artists of Spacehey

Basic Greyscale - coffee queen

Grey and green - Tilapia

This community of Coders could never exist as they do here on Spacehey. Coders making amazing profiles out of the limits they are given. Corys iconic layouts like his Old computer layout, Windows 98 layout, and more. Just amazing feats of coding and design. something as simple as changing backgrounds and fonts in apps like Instagram and TikTok is completely impossible and not allowed. This also applies to blog posts (Duh) which brings me to a very interesting blogger here i026net is a coder and artist here in Spacehey that distorts their blog posts with many filters and colors to form one aesthetic over their account and blog posts

i026Net
Cuthugorash

This robot makes spacehey look like a whole other website. breaking the medium to fully express themselves. like their about page being completely upside down. blog posts filtered and altered to the point where It's hard to find the kudos button. Now lets bring it back to the complete opposite which is just as charming as i026s internet core conversion.

Spacehey owes alot of Its design and current culture to Scene and early internet design. while I hope Spacehey evolves expression it can call itself. It's going off the cues of the 2000s. Tame colors and solid backgrounds have been thrown out for the brightest of bright, and tile backgrounds. not much is done outside of colors and images. adding to the 00s aesthetic. and enhances the expression of the blogger. no matter what Spacehey always puts the bloggers intention ahead of anything. I know It's such a cop out to talk about Goth, emo and scene but its far more interesting to see new age scenes in Spacehey like weirdcore,Y2K, and internet core.

GenZ and The 00s

It's something you can't really ignore. hell even the website Dev is GenZ Something bout them kids makes them love the old internet and y2k fashion. Something about the simplicity and internet freedom made it something GenZ yearns for. "what R U talking about Dewd? Social media giving people body issues and mental illnesses that are perpetuated for profit in an endless loop of stimulation?O_o U have had 2 much monster dewd XD" and it looks cool. that also. has alot to do with it. It's just popular but I like to think that's what people really think

Why Would Anyone Even Wanna Use This Site?

I don't wanna retread over what I said in the Reflection paragraph so I'll say GenZ has been a pretty vocal minority in their hatred towards social media. And from what social media has been for the last 10-12 years Spacehey is really what teenagers want in social media. after all the years of the worsening state of social media and It's consequences. It's just nice to regress to an era that had no bad intentions. extremely creative fandoms. simple websites. actual user privacy. I just love this place. and I'm Shure thats why you're here.
