I was watching a video about the sound design in Top Gun Maverick, and why they totally deserved the Oscar for best sound.
In the video, it talked about that scene where the Darkstar takes off, right over the Admiral, who just stands there motionless as the wind swirls around him and the roof of a nearby building lifts off before crashing back down.
That part with the roof coming off was completely unplanned! They said it really did happen, and the actor was so dedicated to his role that he didn't even flinch when it happened.
What they did was have an F-18 take off and then went back to map the Darkstar over it - so it REALLY DID take off and he REALLY WAS standing right below it.
Maybe he didn't even hear or notice that roof being ripped off. Standing that close to a fighter jet taking off is so incredibly loud and it's absolutely amazing that he stood perfectly still for it.
I do wish Top Gun Maverick had won a couple more Oscars, but at least they got best sound - that was 101% deserved especially because the Darkstar is a fictional craft!
