[Note] Intro to Deontology and Normative Ethics

**What is Deonotology?**
Deontology is one of the most popular theories of ethics in the world. Deontology focuses on right action, instead of good consequences and virtuous people. It is one of the 3 major branhces of Ethics. Theories that state which actions are permissible, impermissible and obligatory, are generally considered Deontological.

**Rules!**
Deontologists focus specifically on rules, if your action follows the moral rules set by a specific Deontological theory, you are morally right in the eyes of that theory. Moral rules are the focal point of Deontological Theories, different theories have different rules.

A lot of Deontologist hold the belief that some actions are inherently wrong, despite the outcome. This constasts with the Consequentialist view that the outcome is whats important, rather than the action taken to get there.

Deontology is criticized for being too restrictive, and Consquentialism is said to be too permissive.

In Deontology action is primary: Sexual Assault is bad because its morally bad.
In Consequentialism consequence is primary: Sexual Assault is bad because it brings about a bad state of affairs.

Both of these are Deontic theories, since they focus on action, rather then Aretaic theories which focus on Virtues and virtuous people.
