Pretty sure I just lost my friendship :D

Basically I was friends with this kid and I won't say his name but he was so toxic. He was so egotistical and rude to everyone. He blamed everything on mental issues, if he failed his test it was because of mental issues, if he broke something of mine it was because of mental issues. I finally decided to confront him about it today. He said that he hated himself for it idk if that's true or not but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Anyways we aren't friends anymore even though he treated super rudely I still care for him and I don't know why.
