Starlight Tours: The mostly unknown darkness of modern Canada

Starlight Tours

Based off of the true-story novel "Starlight Tour"

A little while back I started a book I had picked up from one of those free little library things. I haven't finished it yet, but god has it disturbed me.

It's about what are called 'starlight tours' (I don't know if it's all over Canada, just in Saskatchewan, or just in Saskatoon) which is when the police take aboriginal people out of town and leave them there. One of the common places they would get dropped off (as mentioned in the book) is a little ways from the Queen Elizabeth Power Station, which is about an hours walk to the nearest residential area. And yeah, they even do this in the winter where it can get around -35C/-31F. Most of the time the people don't have the proper clothing to be outside for even 10 minutes let alone an hour.

The book is based around a few different death the occured because of the 'tours'. The first one is Neil Stonechild in the 90s. He was 17 I think and his death was barely investigated at the time. The police even threw-out his clothes afterwards, even though his family asked many times for them. Then in 2000 more people had died, but one guy, Daniel Night, survived and ended up trying to sue the police force to make sure it never happened again (I don't know what happened since I haven't finished the book yet). Because of this whole situation Canada ended up being one of the human-rights-violation countries in Amnesty International.

This book was published in 2007, and my social studies (history, politics, that kinda stuff combined) textbook was printed in 2008. I've learned about numerous tragedies, human-rights violations, and world events from my textbook, but I'd never heard of this. The only things I ever learned about the mistreatment of aboriginal people was when colonization was happening and residential schools.

My family is Metis (European and Indigenous) and my dad works for the penitentiary outside of my town in Alberta. He didn't know about it either but wasn't surprised at all by it.

Why is the world like this?
