An old writing blurb for a story of mine I actually liked

Past the edges of the city, atop the highest mountain, two leaders face their kingdoms. The air is somber, smelling faintly of rot as the world around them slowly dies. Neither expect anything to come of their meeting…

And yet…

"This should be a perspective changer for you... the things we’re capable of and our responsibility to our home."

While her words sound scripted there is an undertone of exhaustion the woman wouldn't show to anyone else. She had no one else to confide. Together they watch the rift tear at the land, sinking rocks and burning foliage into a hideous kaleidoscope of light.

"I like it this way..." the man comments after giving it time, "I'm done being your 'martyr.' So don't ask. You haven't lost enough to understand how awful it feels."

She didn't have a response to that. Not one he'd want to hear.

Instead she turned her back, leaving him on that mountain top alone.
