Flat Earth 101 #1 - Basics

Hi! I'm really interested in the flat earth topic and have been researching it for the past couple of months so I figured I might as well start sharing my knowledge about it. Let me know if there's any specific topic about flat earth/conspiracy theories you'd like me to cover! :)

Well, if you've been on the internet for a while then you probably know what flat earth is. It's a belief that the earth is flat (well, not only, but we'll get to it later). But the topic is much, much deeper than you could probably think.

It's a system of beliefs that change regularly whenever members of this semi-cult find out that their current theories and proofs aren't convincing even for themselves. The thing that holds them together is the base - the earth is flat.

Firstly, I'd like to answer the most common questions about FE:

WHY WOULD ANYONE BELIEVE IN FLAT EARTH AND STICK TO IT?

Well, there's a couple of reasons. The first one that gets most of FE society members into it is the "if I can't check it myself, it's not real" mentality. When you look outside of the window, the earth seems flat, not round - and so they just try their best to prove it. Second one is the fact that flat earthers are surprisingly good with manipulating facts, so if you're not careful enough, you might actually find yourself believing them. Third one is pretty sad, honestly. 

Most of the people who genuinely believe in flat earth are paranoidal/schizophrenical. I'm no psychiatrist, but if you spend more than 10 minutes on an actual flat earther's page you'll notice the vibe - "everybody's trying to cover the truth!" "the whole world is against us!" "they are all out there to get us". That's also why this movement is often connected to other conspiracy theories - about aliens, reptilians, the big bad government, the Rothschild family, yada yada.

IS THERE ANY WAY TO CONVINCE THEM?

The answer's pretty simple - no. Flat earther's can't be convinced otherwise. In my personal experience and opinion, the only moment a flat earther can be convinced that what they believe in is just a bunch of antiscience bullcrap is on the very beggining of their flat journey. Once they step in too deep, there's no way out. It's almost as if the part of their brain that is responsible for critical thinking stops working as soon as the topic is related to flat earth. They'll do anything they can to prove you wrong - starting from actually semi-scientific proofs, through saying all your pictures are CGI or otherwise fake to just shouting that you're being paid by NASA and so can't be telling the truth. So talking to flat earther's is just a waste of time, but watching them spiral is honestly really interesting.

DOES ANYBODY ACTUALLY TAKE FLAT EARTH SERIOUSLY?

 I honestly don't really think so. Except for flat earther's and those few people that they drag into their fucked up ideology sometimes, nobody really takes it in any way seriously, because why would they? 

The thing is about protecting the one's that might actually fall for FE rhetoric. FE Society is getting more and more similar to a cult and a lot of the people in it are actually pretty dangerous. They'll doxx you if you really get under their skin or otherwise try to harm you. Whenever I research this topic by going through their websites or accounts, I always use some multiaccount and I highly reccomend doing that, especially if you plan on arguing with them. 

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON BELIEFS OF FLAT EARTHER'S?

Apart from "the earth is flat" the most common ones are:

-Antarctica has a shape of a ring and is running right next to the earth's edge. It's also protected by military so that no one can see the edge.

-the sky is actually a dome. sun and moon are flying underneath it.

-there is no such thing as "space" or "universe", flat earth is the only thing that exists.

-NASA is paying to all people who know the truth so that they won't spill the fact that the earth is actually flat (don't ask me why, even flat earther's don't know it yet)

-there was no evolution
