I was and am still angry about Enchantment. So here's all of my complaints about it in one convenient blog.
[October 1st, 2021]
“Good evening dreamers and believers” the rea NO SORRY I’M ANGRY THE PRESHOW MUSIC IS THE SAME?????
How /dare/ you just take from such a phenomenal show I’m still in mourning whyyyyyyyyyy.
HEA wasn’t Wishes but I would’ve been crying straight through the second half of the show if I didn’t have such apathy at the PotC theme.
Um anyways I will note that that was mostly sarcastic salt in the wound comment.
Refraining from posting Enchantment thoughts until I watch the livestream and probably until the dust settles from HEA but my thoughts are very mixed and it’s about what I expected from when I watched it from the pier at Grand last night and I was surprised by a few song selections.
This isn’t a bad thing just the only thoughts I can say.
No that’s a lie THAT ROMANCE SECTION IS WEAK.
As somebody who is o b s e s s e d with Disney romance songs using only one and one of the most overused AND NOT A SEE THE LIGHT TANGLED SECTION is an insult.
This is not a valid or real complaint but I’d become accustomed to seeing it and I miss it already. I hope they bring back Once Upon a Time but with the original JP version so I can have my lanterns.
[Discord: Later that night]
Ugh okay so the new firework show sucks.
From a technical stand point it’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s missing something and none of my favorite songs are in it and I just feel nothing.
Like when I got home from HEA the first time I had to fucking nitpick it because I was started tearing up twice during its first run and I was super bitter over Wishes but I left Enchantment feeling empty and I’m trying so hard to be nice and positive to this one because I was so mean and judgy to HEA but I can’t. Every where in it its riddled with flaws and it feels less authentic and there’s less pyro than probably Wishes and ugh.
I feel like I’ve lost a part of me tonight and it’s a stupid fucking firework show I should be able to move on but like...this is my thing. This is my thing. And I know Disney produces duds. They’ve done it before and I’ve torn them apart but never at my home park
I know Disney things grow on me. I know if I give this time it probably will too and I’m probably overreacting to a show I don’t even hate just god I just want HEA back.
Like okay so the “Triumph” section this time is “I am Moana” and first of all this doesn’t work for the Triumph section not because it’s not tone right but because the song is specific to Moana and for her but this could be acceptable if they had Moana projections because then while it’d be a bit much although Moana being the only Disney movie to get two full rep songs is already a bit much it’d at least fit. Like the section can be just a single movie, it’s weird, but whatever. But no they just play the resurection scene from Tangled when Punzie brings back Eugene while this is going on and like what the fuck???
That doesn’t fit because the song is about Moana’s growth and Moana’s triumph why is the scene that’s playing almost fully Tangled???
Or like why is the section on love so rushed?
Enchantment plays out as a very abridged and rushed HEA with extended intro and outro. The wish section and call to journey are combined into one and the friendship and love sections are combined into one.
Except the distribution is n o t equal. The Friendship/Love section is Be Our Guest, Under the Sea, You Got a Friend in Me, A Whole New World, and You Can Fly.
Like can we talk about how there is only one song dedicated to love??? Can we???
Like okay. I am a sucker for Disney romance songs. Like when you watch a Disney movie if you want to know my favorite Disney song in it, you can either pick the “I want” oscar bait song or the “romance duet” of the movie and you’re probably correct. So there is bias here but like...
Wishes had three songs dedicated to their romance section: Cinderella, Once Upon a Dream, and Beauty and the Beast.
HEA had four in it Love is an Open Door, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, You’ll Be In My Heart, and See the Light. Like what kind of downgrade???? To go to one! Fucking! Romance! Song. One
And okay, that’s fine, we’re genericizing love again in a way that lumps friendship and love together. That’s cool, right?
Oh wait let’s go back to that song list comparison
HEA opened its friendship section with Friend Like Me, the Trashing the Camp, Hakuna Matata, You Got a Friend in Me, Bare Necessities, and “That’s What Friends are For” or whatever the song name is.
Like sorry for a second how are we quantifying these? You Can Fly and Under the Sea are not friend songs and I would never even think of them in the same category?
Like okay, you might argue that Hakuna Matata and Bare Necessities aren’t either but the core of their stories is based in the friendship of Timon and Puumba and Mowgli and Baloo respectively. That is not the case with Under the Sea and You Can Fly is, in fact, a call to adventure. It’s Peter inviting them to Neverland.
Because guess what, Peter Pan has a friend song. It’s called Following the Leader and is John and Michael befriending the Lost Boys. And you know what else it has???
A! Non! Romantic! Designated! Love! Song! “Your mother and mine” is a song about loving a mother figure or family figure and it’s tragically under recognized, and does not have any racist lyrics like Following the Leader does.
BUT NO. WE CAN’T HAVE THAT. WE HAVE TO DEDICATE A FUCKING SECTION TO FROZEN.
“What’s that Heather I thought you like Frozen” why yes I do. I love Frozen II and Into the Unknown but it’s so poorly utilized I’m going to lose it.
Into the Unknown is a call to adventure song. What they should have done is put it with Second Star to the Right, Almost There, Just Around the Riverbend, and that one seafarer song from when Moana that I don’t know the name of. In fact, they should’ve not included that and not because of my lack of preference towards it, but because if you’re going to put a Moana tribute as the Triumph section, you cannot have two Moana sections.
So we’re about to get some blasphemy here. Wishes isn’t perfect. Shocking from me, I know. One of its biggest flaws is that it just stops all progress for this Aladdin section and for about two minutes all you have is Aladdin, which is the longest section of the show to dedicate to a single movie aside from the Wishes motif and When You Wish Upon a Star, which make up the main theme of this show. I don’t even really like the section musically. It’s just weak.
Anyways, when you take up that much time in the show for one movie, it balances uncomfortably and having a 40 second dedication followed by another entire section focusing on that movie is too much. It’s the Frozen in Once Upon a Time (the park show) problem. It destroys balance in the show. This wasn’t a problem in HEA because outside of Go the Distance (which is the triumph section), the longest section of the show dedicated to a single movie was (also) Moana at around a minute? I’ll check time stamps tomorrow. (5:30-6:38, so yeah a minute)
But like...this is all my musicality shit. From a technical stand point none of this matters and despite my ranting none of this is enough of a crime like Marvel or Star Wars in castle shows, or my fatigue from the Pirates theme, or a case of irritating projections, it’s not terrible or bad or enough to make me angry. It’s just not good and results in me just feeling nothing over the show. No tears. No emotional anything. Nothing.stand point none of this matters and despite my ranting none of this is enough of a crime like Marvel or Star Wars in castle shows, or my fatigue from the Pirates theme, or a case of irritating projections, it’s not terrible or bad or enough to make me angry. It’s just not good and results in me just feeling nothing over the show. No tears. No emotional anything. Nothing.
And like maybe if we hadn’t come off of two back to back stellar shows, or weren’t coming into the 50th I’d be less upset but this is our big anniversary show??????
I wasn’t expecting a part tribute. Whatever made “Remember...Dreams Come True” a thing wasn’t come to Florida and I knew that. But an anniversary show should feel like a celebration, it should feel strong, it should’ve been a bang of Disney’s absolute top tier best they could do.
And instead it’s just...kinda lame.
Like if things had been how I’d always expected, Wishes staying until 2021 and then a new show taking over and that show had been HEA? I mean it still wasn’t Wishes but hell yeah. I would’ve been all over that. It would’ve felt like the show we deserved and I would’ve been ready to say goodbye.
But that’s not what we got and instead I’m just like *how dare you stand where he stood* gif.
But I’m still more offended on behalf of Wishes and HEA than I am actually feeling anything about this show and yeah that’s the worst part anyways.
I’m done. I think this is the longest I’ve gone off about a show and that’s impressive honestly.
Closing thoughts tho: Haha can’t believe seeing the projections actually made me hate the show more can you believe that?
The people insisting people don't like Enchantment because it's not HEA need to stop sucking Disney's dick and that's saying something from me.
I hated when it first dropped because it wasn't Wishes.
Enchantment has a lot of problems and I am not here for pretending it didn't.
"You all hate change" you're right I do because I like my things that are old but the first day I saw HEA I literally went "Okay it's not Wishes and I hate that but 95% of it is good it's just not Wishes"
Enchantment I spent an hour going off in a discord server and started crying because Disney World fireworks are such a huge part of me that this show being a mediocre HEA copy just broke my heart.
Like if Disney parks shows are going to be grab bags of "This is your favorite song love it" then when none of the songs are my favorite shit stings.
I could literally go off again about why this show is inferior to both Wishes and HEA without even trying and it's like...okay I get releasing something superior that I just don't like as much, but releasing something inferior isn't something we should be defending guys.
Anyways I found my new least favorite Disney fans, /Enchantment stans/
Stop acting like your victims and the only reason people hate your fucking show is because it's not HEA okay shut the fuck up and sit down.
*listens to the finale of Enchantment and only the finale while blocking every person defending the actual show* This is literally the only valid part of the show everything else is fucking terrible thank you and good night.
I'm literally actually about to listen to this full show right now and live tweet the soundtrack (not the show) and there's going to be a tweet every time I hear the "You Are the Magic" melody line or any consistent motif whatsoever and then you guys will understand why it sucks.
- Start of the show: Obviously it's going to be here this is the intro that introduces the main melody of the show I don't think that needs to be explained but we're tweeting that here just for reference.
- This is a sad side note there's a melody line that sounds more like HEA than there is one that sounds like You Are the Magic. But it's honestly just a transitional. Right now there's just been transitionals and Disney songs.
- Sorry I just had a memory that the second movement was when I started to actually lose hope in this show. Fantasmic's bubble sequence did this better bye.
- I ALSO STILL DON'T REMEMBER WHAT THIS FUCKING SECTION'S THEME IS. IS IT HAPPINESS? FRIENDSHIP? LOVE? WHAT I DON'T.
- WAIT HANG ON THAT TRANSITION MIGHT'VE BEEN A MAIN THEME SIDE MELODY IT'S NOT THE CHORUS BUT IF IT'S SOMETHING I GOTTA LISTEN TO THE MELODY'S AGAIN.
- No I was wrong I just compared it to the intro lmao it's just a transition build, but since Enchantment's melody line is mostly ascending direction and they use similar instrumentation it's easy to have confused it.
- OH COME ON THE YOU CAN FLY TO THE INTO THE UNKNOWN SECTION WOULD'VE BEEN FUCKING PRIME MUSICAL BUILD FOR THE MAIN MELODY LINE TO RETURN THE MUSIC FELT LIKE IT WAS LEADING INTO IT I'M
- Side note why does every movement have a break in it. I know HEA did that but that's because they had musical set ups in narration, it just feels like dead space here?
- I'm doing these random notes to keep myself engaged since it's just music and no video and my brain is too ADHD for that.
- I'M SO FUCKING TIRED OF MOANA OH MY GOD IT MAKES UP 10% OF THE SHOW AT LEAST JESUS FUCK NOT EVEN FROZEN DOES THAT HERE.
- AND OUTRO WHERE THE THEME RETURNS OH MY GOD THEY REALLY DON'T USE THE FUCKING THEME EVER IN THE SHOW OH MY GOD EVEN HEA USES IT ONCE. THERE'S NO SMALL SECRETS IN THE MUSIC. IT'S EXACTLY AS IT IS AND SEEMS I'M
- Consistent motif is three ascending notes in the music and that's being generous if I'm being honest. God I hate this soundtrack I'm just so mad god they made this to say fuck you to me specifically.
Disney: Here's the fireworks show that's replacing your beloved Wishes.
Me: I don't want this please don't I don't even want hope it's just never going to be Wishes.
Disney: lol
Disney: Here's the fireworks show replacing HEA
Me: Huh, main theme's a bop, I'm really optimistic and excited. I have a lot of hope.
Disney: lol
Are you okay? No girl the new Disney fireworks show sucks ass and people are trying to d e f e n d it by insisting it's just bitter fans and listen, like what you like, but I have actual musical knowledge behind me. This show is musically weak please stop trying to act smart.
This specific projection type on the castle (with the not-KH heart on the gate) and this specific video of the finale music are the only good parts of Enchantment by.
Like okay I know when I see this show in person enough times I'll probably (hopefully) like it but also I'm annoyed that I have to let it grow on me in the first place in order to even remotely like it.
Like with HEA of course I was upset that Wishes was gone but also like... I still actually /liked/ it when I first saw it. Like I had to convince myself there were enough negatives to not like it, and I still watched it four times in its first three months and was listening to the soundtrack on its own by spring of 2018. I loved that show to death by its end date. Like dude I was mourning Wishes and I still cried twice during its debut because I felt things.
I cannot think of one time Enchantment made me feel anything while I was watching it the first time or when I heard the music from the pier at Grand and that says something.
Heather why are you salting about Enchantment this time THE POSTER IS SO GENERIC FEELING I HATE IT WHY IS IT SO B O R I N G.
I vibe with the Wishes one a lot because there's a Tinker Bell and the focus of the show is ultimately on the night sky.
Yeah
Yeah I really don't have to say anything more.
Yeah
I honestly dare you to say anything bad about this one and mean it.
Me @ me: There are better things to do with your time than watch Enchantment Heather. You can do better things with your time. /Don't fucking do this Heather/
Me, ignoring myself and looking up Enchantment to find the Dis video to finally form a full onion.
- So the Peter Pan silhouette castle hurts my eyes a bit but that's just the vid and more importantly...why are the silhouettes stationary? It's such an odd decision to have them stay on with no movement in the main chorus???
- I hate the voice so much. I know I've complained about this before just...She does not work she is not it for a Disney fireworks show.
- Okay so actually I really lowkey vibe with the visuals of the first segment. When it swapped to the Raya visuals it's a bit too stationary without enough movement in the Moana segment but aside from that my only complaint is tied to the soundtrack, which I went off about.
- This is a visually less interesting toyblock castle from HEA. Like idk man this second meaningless (the one I still do not understand) just has a lot of sections and is inspired by /Mary Blair/ and just there's been not a lot super exciting going on.
- THE MONSTER'S INC CASTLE IS SO CHAOTIC LOOKING EW I HATE IT
- ...don't look at me I may be angry the romance section is reduced to 20 seconds and the most overplayed Disney love song there is but yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- D-Did Enchantment actually do a clever visual here? Starting the section with Soul and the main character playing the piano and ending with the Souls on screen after the flight of You Can Fly???? I'm stunned they had one clever visual.
- They actually gave one of the most interesting animation Disney songs in the show probably one of the least visually stimulating sequences of the show and I don't know how that happened.
- I ACTUALLY LAUGHED SEEING THIS IN NIGHT OF BALD MOUNTAIN LIKE HONEY I LOVE CINDERELLA BUT THIS SCENE DOES NOT BELONG IN THIS SEQUENCE FOR SO LONG I'M.
- No but seriously Night on Bald Mountain is a clip show with uninteresting backgrounds and I think Wishes had more stimulating castle details on its fireworks shows.
- The only interesting visual in this entire sequence was Te Ka (sp?) attacking Moana that's it that was the only interesting thing that happened and I'm still pretty sure it was taken directly from the movie like all the other footage in this segment was.
- ...I literally cannot stand the Triumph section I'm. I
- The castle looks like this the entire time aside from the one moment Moana holds the heart of Te Fiti just with different segments. Tangled holds way too long on the castle. It's /fucking boring./ And the song isn't generic enough to fit because it's /Moana's/ song.
- "In fact lies within...you!" I'm sorry the way she read that is so funny why is there a pause and then happy burst "you" it takes away so much sentimentality. I know I'm not supposed to be going off about the soundtrack but sometimes this show can't be discussed without that.
- Again that finale is super anticlimactic and feels like the music cuts off abruptly but can we like talk about how easy it would've been to do the visuals on this right.HEA's visuals are literally just the colors on the castle changing. There are no visuals to bookend the beginning where we see the Pixie Dust escape before we unlock the magic from the keyhole. Enchantment's starter visuals had several character silhouettes. All they needed to do. Literally /all/ they needed to do to make this visually interesting is show the characters from those silhouettes in full color and movement. And there would've been so much payoff. And no. They couldn't even do that. This ending felt so much like Celebrate the Magic's ending but less good because after they show these characters (and then some) /they show stills./ Wouldn't fix how the music awkwardly pauses for Tink and loses momentum but it could've helped the finale at least.
Okay I'm done. I'm done. I'll stop going off about fireworks now. The only visually interesting sections are the first two and the second is only good 50% of the time that's my verdict bye.
Side note I went into the youtube comments AND WHAT DOES THIS FUCKING MEAN.
- Retweeting this specifically to elaborate like what does this mean. "Some of these movies are deeper movies." Okay and? What does the depth of these movies have to do with their usage in these shows being good? Like it's just so irrelevant like some gotcha except it means nothing and if it wasn't two months old I would literally be like "What on earth are you on about the meanings of the movies featured in these segments means nothing."
- Both HEA and Enchantment had Moana sections. One of those segments is significantly better and the meaning doesn't even make a difference there because both are Moana.
I'm not going to go off about something bad in Enchantment again. I'm not going to go off about it. I'm not going to go off about it I've said enough.
Anyways why for HEA did they literally update the projections to incorporate the medallion for the anniversary and then for Enchantment there's at least a few moments that very clearly ignore it entirely I'm
Me: Harmonious is just okay and Enchantment is awful. Fantasmic will be great when it comes back but it still hasn't come back so I guess I don't really have that drive to stay until fireworks right now. Also me: It's been four months since I've seen one...
Enchantment is literally going to end up stockholm syndroming me into liking it isn't it? I miss staying to fireworks and we probably won't have Fantasmic back until at least summer so like...this is literally my only option and my brain gremlin about fireworks isn't happy.
"Heather why aren't you acknowledging Harmonious in this you liked it better just stay for fireworks at Epcot" Harmonious doesn't have the right vibes, ya know? I liked the show just like...ya know the vibes. The *sparkle* Disney *sparkle* vibes. IllumiNations didn't have them either but it was my nostalgia show and had a killer soundtrack for a music geek such as myself so the missing Disney vibes wasn't a big deal to me. This show is too Disney to not have the vibes I'm talking about and that's really all it's missing. Like it's a good show just with the wrong energy.
Enchantment is a terrible show but it has the right energy because of its main theme and when I want to watch a Disney firework show I really just /want/ that energy desperately which is why I'm so upset that it's a terrible show. It could've been good if they just did it right.
I know I need to elaborate on it and I can't so the best way to describe it is I knew HEA coming was going to be okay in the end because when I heard the theme song in full for the first time it /had/ that energy. I knew Mickey's Magic Mix was going to be /awful/ because the main theme does /not/ have that energy. When I heard You Are the Magic's preview before the show it had that energy. I went in expecting it to be good and very excited and it wasn't until I was standing on the docks of the Grand on Sep 30th and heard the music from a distance did I begin to temper that excitement and expectations for what I knew would be inevitable disappointment on the 50th itself. Enchantment has the better energy but is an awful show. Harmonious is a much better show but the vibes are too off. And I'd rather stockholm syndrome myself into liking the bad show with the right vibes than constantly just watch the good show that I know I'll never form an emotional connection with. Still enjoy Harmonious just it's not causing me to form that connection.
I know I'm not making sense if you haven't been dealing with me for ten years and I'm probably barely even making sense if you have and you're dismissing this as a Heatherism and you'd be correct to do so just accept this.
OH I KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN THE VIBES.
I have never felt a desire to look up the Harmonious sound track. I am actively listening to You Are the Magic as I type.
