PIERCE THE VEIL: THE JAWS OF LIFE ((2023)) The Jaws of Life is the 5th studio album by the American screamo band, and marks the return from their 7 year hiatus. And I gotta say, it's a solid return to the music scene, although with slight flaws. their sound present in a good number of the tracks in this project were slower and almost "pop-ier." which isn't a bad thing at all, I quite enjoyed a lot of it. It just came as a surprise because of the single released before the album "Pierce The Nirvana," which was super hard hitting track with heavy vocals and distortion (along with the subject at hand)
Death Of An Executioner is an ecstatic return to form, blasting you back to their sound that was present since the beginning. angsty baselines and distinct guitars that follow suit in a dramatic fashion with Vic Fuentes' signature vocals. It's a classic, yet new track that was done well.
Pass The Nirvana is one of my personal favorites, with new mixing and additional production than usual. This, of course, paid off very well in the way it was used. glitchy and low EQ guitars introduce you to the song before thrusting you straight into an insanely catchy and noisy guitar riff. The whole song is incredibly angry and filled with a dangerous energy that I adore. The whole track was instrumented so well and I'm excited to hear more like this.
Issues start with the track Even When I'm Without You, which is a lot dreamer and softer on the overall sound. unlike Pass The Nirvana, this tracks production totally takes me out of the experience for a little bit. It's a cute track, but it had a poor transition and I'm very mixed on the heavy production elements on this one.
Emergency Contact is a fun track about finding somebody who feels better than any sort of therapy. it sounds both desperate yet optimistic in lyrics and in the overall vibe. It's another really good track that I can shmoove to. Unfortunately, the last 4 tracks before 12 Fractures were nothing to write home about and feel like complete filler. they weren't terrible, but they were a tad disappointing.
The collaboration with Chloe Moriondo on 12 Fractures was super unexpected! It's such a weird pair, but they made it work pretty okay. It definitely sounds more like a Chloe Moriondo track than a Pierce The Veil track.
The majority of this album was really really good and had me nodding my head like it was 2014 again. Pierce The Veil continues to change and adapt to the music scene, and overall, they've been super successful and I hope they continue to make more in this new return to the band. 7.6/10
favorite tracks:
Pass The Nirvana (9/10) Emergency Contact (8/10) The Jaws Of Life (7.5/10)
