Disney's Illuminations Liveblog

  • You know I still hate Disney's Illuminations but I'll be damned if I forgot how much that rendition of A Dream is a Wish Your Heart makes slaps. And that it uses my favorite Disney song in its LK section.
  • LK section is also still fantastic like damn I forgot just how good this show started off before it's inevitable fall.
  • OH SHIT I FORGOT ABOUT THE LITTLE MERMAID SECTION WITH PART OF YOUR WORLD ENTIRELY THE FIRST HALF OF THIS SHOW REALLY WAS MADE TO APPEAL TO ME.

Too much happened on the castle and it was just like "Why don't we just vomit as much from the sequel trilogy in random times as possible" and Disney why we didn't need it. The random space battle was lowkey a little dull. Also 0/10 not enough Anakin Skywalker.
  • Transition was smoother than I remembered in that Frozen section. Still too much pink in the Let it Go projections. Using For The First Time in Forever Reprise is still good decision I approve.

  • Lmao that finale still slaps. Things I really gotta say Disney did right is that arrangement of A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes. If I could get a full release of it without the rest of the show that'd be great.

So in conclusion with all that nonsense tweeting. Mayhaps I've been a little harsh on Illuminations. It doesn't deserve that name (IllumiNations is my speed) and I still think Star Wars does not belong on a castle and they should've done something more original with their time than just 1:1 replicating Shanghai's Ignite the Dream with a stronger start and weaker Let It Go and the addition of LA BatB (LA in castle shows period is a crime and that's my tea for today) but you know what. I've been way too mean to it. Especially in light of the disasters that Disney has put out the past two years (Together Forever and the Mickey's Birthday one) so overall? I'll give it a 6/10. Not my favorite firework show Disney's done, but acceptable. Still not as good as Disney Dreams tho.

Weird Dream Journal

I had the weirdest dream I had to hunt down all these people who were part Anakin except I was also part Anakin and this quest led me to accidentally have my Figment car detatch and get sent to the Figment fourth dimension. And like brain. You okay? Like I’m very confused.

I just needed you all to hear about the Figment fourth dimension because I’ve never had a weirder dream in my life.

In case people are wondering what the Figment fourth dimension is it’s like rider car storage except covered in Figment pictues and only accepts single cars and this somehow still was not the weirdest point of my dream because XEHANORT of all people was the hunting down part Anakins.

Yes you read that right not Palpatine it was Xehanort I just remember the final one I met being actually Xehanort I can assume with that knowledge they all were the nort man hunting us down. I somehow think this dream was a product of my intense love of Anakin Skywalker and my best friend and I jokingly assigning each other the absolute worst kin we possibly could last night which I think is the funniest part. I think a dream just kin assigned me Anakin Skywalker.

Wishes Liveblog

It's the fireworks live tweet the world has been waiting for: Wishes.

  • It's been four years and I still remember this shows every beat I'm just silently mouthing along the words.

If you want to understand me please watch this I could go in depth for so long about just everything that's amazing about it. Original animation. Cohesive castle designs. Brilliant main theme. Excellent song choice. There was so much care put into this. I cannot stop thinking enough how much this is the successor that HEA deserved, not Enchantment. I know I need to let it go but oh my god I just...this is fantastic.

You know it's fitting the show that would've absolutely kicked HEA's ass in being phenomenal and everything Enchantment wanted to be would come from Hong Kong the theme for HEA also came from Hong Kong Disneyland this makes too much sense.

AK Bluesky (D23)

Hmm, actually thinking about my feelings for a moment about the possible spitballing for MK and AK and I think it's real telling that none of the IPs they want to include are pre-2015

Like to actually break down my thoughts and feelings it's like...I get that Zootopia and Moana are more modern movies but first of all Moana has nothing to do with AK and should be in Adventureland (I'm right) but second wouldn't something like TLK or god forbid Jungle Book fit better if you've absolutely got to disassemble Dinoland?

But then MK's has me all sorts of yucky because there's never been an IP themed land in MK? IPs in MK like yeah, that checks out, but all the themes have always been generic and idk I really don't think we should just have specific themed lands like...Encanto ride in MK? Absolutely perfect. Love that. A fantastic addition. Villain's themed land in general? Now you're talking. But just like I feel yucky about Star Wars in Disneyland itself (even if I understand why) I don't like it in MK either.

It all just kinda feels like Disney just riding on the heels of their popular and new IPs for fast promotion without actually thinking about what and where things should go or the integrity of each park. Like at the end of the day, just like with Cosmic Rewind, will I enjoy the attractions and have fun with them? Absolutely yes. But also just like with Cosmic Rewind the theme park fan in me will be mourning the integrity to these additions and the lack of real thought put intohow they're added to the parks.

Idk guys sometimes I really do wish I could go back to the days before I actually sat down and thought about theme parks from a critical and theming stance and not just "hehe rides" I think announcements were more fun then.

SPM Hyperfixation

I don't think people understand how feral I go when something makes me think about SPM for more than 20 seconds my brain literally has too many serotonin ties to Timpani and Blumiere that I can't think of anything else.

I need more things to read for them there's not enough content I need to salvage things from my first laptop if there's any chance of getting it to start up I've already read all the SPM writing I did on my itouch and phone in 2013 I need more.

I really, really need people to understand there's a lot of fandoms I'm not normal about but something about SPM has always been particularly bad because how do I go off about Count Bleck and Tippi to people who haven't played the game they don't understand.

It's funny I have a long streak of normal and then literally anything brings SPM to mind and I become this. A single piece in high school brought SPM to mind once and I became this I'm not normal.

Me, two months ago: Happily Ever After is returning and I'm very glad. Me, seeing the DLP NYE Wishes with projections: I don't care about HEA please just give me back her.

"Heather are you okay" Wishes is lighting up the sky again somewhere and there's a slowly increasing presence of KH in the Disney parks after ten years of that being all I wanted how do you think I am?

IllumiNations and Rivers of Light

Rivers of Light killed Epcot's fireworks. This is my take and I'm dying on it.

I will preface this by saying I have not even seen youtube footage of Rivers of Light so I am probably a part of the problem but I'm watching that one Disney night melody medley right now and since I'm trying to focus on the background music I'm literally listening to it and I realized that a lot of the same stuff going on with Rivers of Light is the stuff that goes on with Fantasmic. Water projections, fountains, barges. But with one key difference. Fantasmic is a Disney show centered around Disney characters. Rivers of Light has none of that.

Now enter 2017. You've just changed out Wishes for Happily Ever After. Happily Ever After is a hugely successful show, replacing the fourteen year long juggernaut of nighttime spectaculars. You now know that the people coming to your park like, and may even be excited by change. At least, so long as the change is good. So you start looking at changing out some fireworks shows for something new and exciting to draw crowds. Epcot has been running its fireworks show since 1999. Twenty years is a long time, so this is your next target. Then, you start looking at the demographics and tech. You've introduced two new shows in the past year: The first is Rivers of Light, and it's been met with mediocre reviews. Happily Ever After is a smash hit with all audiences. Furthermore, Fantasmic uses the same tech as Rivers and even it's "weakest" version has been a popular hit with crowds since its debut in 1998 and Wishes dominated the night sky until its retirement.

Disney knows the power of its brand. They know people are coming to them exclusively because they're Disney. And their non-IP shows are absolutely failing. So what is the solution? The solution is just to say "Well, people want the IP, we give them the IP" and so they drafted up a temporary show (Epcot Forever) and a transition show (Harmonious) to bridge the gap so they can have IP shows with no other regard. Never mind that the reason Rivers of Light failed is because it wasn't good, we're Disney, we can't create a bad show. And so rather than replace IllumiNations with a spiritual successor (a replacement that despite my insistence that the show was timeless...yeah, okay, I get it) they decided to do what they were already doing to Epcot and just Disney it up. After all, who wants a non-Disney firework show at their Disney park lmao.

I am disclaiming now after reading this whole thread this isn't an attack on Harmonious or Epcot Forever or even the show coming in. This is just me pointing out my newest theory on why the park's firework shows now have no regard for what Epcot is and once more mourning the fact that I will never be able to capture the same experience to show others that I had when I was a kid at Epcot.

Sporking SPM Fanfic

My partner and I are making fun of the wildest SPM fic in the tag and I am quite simply going crazy at the line "The tentacles are a character" "Okay. Okay *processes* What?"

We're also currently trying to figure out who the fuck "the demon" is. I thought it was Blumiere? Maybe it's his father? Maybe it's another character? I do not understand.

I would like to make it clear I am the only person in this conversation who has played SPM. So he has no idea of any of these characters are. It only makes it funnier.

Jamie, after summarizing a long chain of is the oc ship of the second story incest: "I think Mario's dead."

The answer to this question is Dimentio is fucking Blumiere who is still married to Timpani in an open relationship and Dimentio finds one oc baby in a dumpster while the other is the child of Timpani and Blumere so the end result is we still don't know.

Hadestown NYTW vs Broadway

Listening to Chant II from NYTW and people think this is better??????

Every time people think NYTW songs are better than the Broadway version of Hadestown I am consistently disappointed. The story telling is significantly stronger in the Broadway version and Persephone's lines in Chant II are not worth losing Orpheus's and Eurydice's. Why are we using the song in this one too like ????? It pulls so much from Chant I, too much honestly. If I wanna hear a Persephone verse that badly I'll just listen to the live recordings from London. (Edit: Turns out that version is from an early Broadway run) That's honestly the best version of Chant II out there.

Sorry not sorry I just think "If I raise my voice, if I raise my head, could I change my fate? If I raise my voice could I change the way it is" and the worker's parts are much more interesting musically than Persephone's verse in NYTW and the lalalalas and repeat of If It's True

I feel the same way about Epic III but that one I do at least agree that lyrically Epic III is significantly better when listening to NYTW and London. I just think thematically it's better to have the repeat of the melody from Epic I, which from what I can tell is lost in those versions of Epic III.

Okay but actually like story wise this is such a weaker decision too I'm sorry I'm not over this. Is Orpheus singing his lalalas like him trying to just get Hades to listen by singing it??? That's??? Admittedly I don't typically choose to listen to NYTW over Broadway but I legitimately don't understand the story decision behind having Orpheus's only lyrical part in Chant II be Hades and Persephone's song so he can bring back spring? Without the Orpheus and Eurydice parts the song just becomes Hades and Persephone projecting their lovers quarrel on Orpheus and Eurydice which like...is overexplaining the parallels we're supposed to be drawing and are handled more subtley in Chant 1. (Parallels to Wedding Song) And it also very much takes away both of their agencies which is very much annoying. Don't vibe with it. Both Hades and Persephone are so resigned to suffer here too which I'm also a little skeptical of given how How Long is the first time Persephone has been sober the whole musical. Just another reason the London Persephone verse is better.

(There is a nonzero possibility people are talking about the London (Early Broadway) version of the song when talking about the Persephone verse I guess, but I just find it unlikely when NYTW is easier to access.)

Epcot Parking Changes

They changed the Epcot parking lots and I'm disgusted.

No but like for real Epcot has lost almost all of its core identity and this just proves it. This was an unnecessary and stupid change. It's not like when they changed the MGM parking lots and I was only upset for a single lot, or the MK ones where I literally didn't care. They didn't necessarily reflect changes in the theme of the park. MGM was still about the movies and the characters in it, Magic is a clash of heroes and villains. Epcot was a park of exploration and discovery, the place where science and imagination met, and so having names like Wonder, Journey, Amaze, Create, Discover, Explore, and Imagine worked with the identity. The use of characters matches everything I've been saying.

The identity is just...gone.

Disneyland Fireworks: Wondrous Journeys

Anyways I was gonna work on my Orphydice fanfic but have come to realize today is the day a new fireworks show launches at a new park that I'm not really expecting to have a chance to see in person before it leaves so as per usual, liveblog below.

  • All videos on youtube are shaky with no tripod I should wait like a week for the DIS to release theirs but nah, we gotta do this now.
  • *hears the first three notes* EXCUSE THE FUCK THAT'S WISHES. (It's not literally. Different orchestral scoring and all just the note pattern and notes used are the same ones that make up the melody line to "Wishes dream" and well I...)
  • I swear I've heard the singer for the new theme before. Also the old Disney animation sketches on the castle are like...really cute.
  • The main theme doesn't sound Disney. It sounds like a pop song which is an interesting decision. The lyrics aren't bad though and the castle is very pretty.
  • WHEJ YOU WISH UPON A STAR INTO I'M WISHING OHM MY GOD
  • Wow that wishing section has me really soft IS THT GO THE DISTANCE
  • Wow they really said "We know the best part of Harmonious is the Go the Distance/How Far I'll Go mash up so what if we made it better by adding Belle (Reprise) to the mix."

  • Okay but for real I love that the first section of the Disney movie segment (outside of When You Wish Upon a Star) is Snow White, the oldest Disney movie and the last one is Encanto, which at the time they were probably drafting this show and what to include was the newest.
  • Alright so final thoughts on the show. I think the Disney section was very nice. I am a little upset at the lack of a romance section since my two favorite genres of Disney song are Wish/I Want songs and love songs but it's not bad. For a show celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Disney animation studio I do think it was very short (13 minutes is a short show) but it did utilize the time it did have very well. There were a lot of clever moments mixed in with some I liked less, but nothing that was egregious enough to be a fatal mistake for the show I do think of the shows currently running, it's probably middle of the row, beating out the Shanghai show, Illuminations, and Enchantment for sure, but losing to HEA (in three months) and Momentous (I have no idea what's actually running at Tokyo Disneyland right now lol.) Personally, I think I'd like it better if the main theme felt Disney. It's a nice song but I like most other fireworks main themes better and it's not one I'm going to dig for an isolated version of. Other than that, the projections on the castle are definitely the highlight here because they were like...literally incredible. Anyways nice show. Not something I think I'm going to rush out to Disneyland to catch but also not something I'd be disappointed if I was out in Cali in the next year and I saw it. So all and all, I'm pretty content.

I almost thought about changing my Disney show rankings for a moment but no actually including Marvel and Star Wars in Disney parks castle shows still is too heinous of a crime to place this below Shanghai and Illuminations and it is still better than Enchantment because if nothing else there's better song selection and the projection mapping is much neater and looks much better than Enchantment's so like...nah still definitely a solid 2nd place until HEA comes back, just not my favorite I've seen or my favorite out of DL. Disneyland Forever and World of Color and Remember...Dreams Come True are still out here living in my brain sorry Wondrous Journeys you're not winning here.

Final side note before I shut up about fireworks for the night is that I probably should watch World of Color: One at some point but like...what's the point of that on youtube. The youtube World of Color experience is nowhere near watching it in person so it's like...nah.

On the subject of Masriel:

Whereas most of my ships I love them because I think they're just really nice or fun together being into HDM means I'm looking at Asriel and Marisa like they're insects in a cage and I am significantly less invested in their happiness than I am in watching them feed off of each other in the most horrible and fascinating way possible. These two are not mentally stable or reasonable by any stretch of the imagination and that is absolutely makes them fun.

Also jfc they need to fuck. I stopped at the end of episode 6 today and the amount of times they have been mentally undressing each other like jfc. I know they got together through a likely toxic affair but like...damn there's unresolved tension here thirteen years later. I am specifically referring to the scene where she spits on him and he chokes her in response. Absolute disasters. Fucking hot as shit. I hate them. I love them. I think they should never have another child. I think they probably should have never been allowed near the one they had in the first place. I want them to have a happy ending where they get to raise Lyra anyways even though it's not what either of them deserve.
