Whenever Miette Hope and I get together we end up talking about larger life issues, we dont set out to do this, but after a few sips of coffee we've deep into metal health, addiction, depression. So when we started talking about the visual for Happy People we in a way had years of preparation.
We didn't want happy people to be overdramatic or the worst day of someone's life. The video was to live in the mundane, that on the outside, nothing seemed wrong. This feeling of I should be happy in a way allows for the sadness to be even more consuming.
For the video itself, we met in Brooklyn, walked around dumbo, took the ferry and ended up in Williamsburg. It was a surprisingly warm winter day so the city was crowded with happy people enjoying the after which helped us get into the right mood for the video.
Miette has an innate ability to stay in character, which allowed me to film the music video more like a documentary then a music video. Directing a little bit if there was a moment I liked that I wanted to film a different way.
My foundation for film making is making videos with friends in high school, and this video reminded me of that, just two friends with a camera having fun making a video together, this is a recipe that almost always yields a strong final product.
