[Part 1] What's the deal with "High Definition" Video?

03/04/2023

You've been LIED TO about 1080p?

Nah, not really. So what's with the fake clickbait? (Not that I need to clickbait anyone, this is just a blog...)

Online Streaming Kind of Sucks

If you've noticed that online streaming quality sort of sucks, you're right! It's really a pretty simple result of the fact that videos on the Internet are not a substitute for locally-stored files, especially those pulled directly from physical, optical formats like Blu-Ray.

In general, this is true even when the resolution / quality of the video claims to be the same!!!!!!!

Why?

A Crazy Little Thing called Compression

If you're YouTube, there's no possible way that you're going to be able to afford to provide the utmost highest quality to the MILLIONS of users watching videos at any given moment. Hence, "cutting corners"...

Not All Streaming Quality is Made Equal

[NOTE: This is NOT a comprehensive test, just a quick & dirty illustration of my point]

Take this example:
1920x1080 video from YouTube, on the Firefox browser.

1080p youtube

Next, a 1920x1080 video from The Hobbit, sourced from the BluRay.
Hobbit 1
Hobbit 2

It really becomes obvious when looking at scenes where a lot is going on (such as a city landscape or jungle), OR a very up-close shot of a face. YouTube's quality just does NOT cut it.

Before I had watched this movie, I thought "well, 1080p isn't great, I would prefer 4k I guess...", only to find out:

Holy Crap, REAL High-Quality 1080 is ACTUALLY pretty damn good!!!

The lesson here is that if you really care about viewing at genuine high quality, streaming it online is NOT the way to go. This is even true when you're paying for online streaming services, which I will detail in a Part 2 (!!)  :0

this is pretty cool, but does it matter for 2d stuff like anime?

Thanks. Yes, it matters for anything you're streaming, regardless of the genre. However, there are some other things to keep in mind. If you want to save videos at higher quality, you have to source them from somewhere, AND find the space to store them. Also, streaming is more convenient for the average person. So, there's a trade-off.
