Some Nice Looks
A recent project of mine has been fine-tuning the way I play old video games. I've discovered some CyberLab shader presets on RetroArch which lead to a really nice look, based off of this "Mega Bezel" concept. Essentially, it's just making your screen look like an old TV.
You can even do reflections, so it looks like the TV is emitting real light! Take a look:
An Authentic 3DS Vibe
One of the GREAT options is one which makes the border look like a real 3DS. Makes you feel like you've got it in your hands!
Not Entirely Perfect
For some games, the result can be a little dark. It can be hard to decide which shaders to use at any given point, and there's almost TOO many options. So, it will require more research and finding better documentation / experimentation.
The Point of It All
I think people have a lot of nostalgia for this old way of doing things. Also, many of these titles were actually made with this type of screen in mind, so the art can sometimes look a lot BETTER when you re-create how it would have looked back in the day.
It's also super fun to feel like you're sitting in your old living room, many moons ago.
