having dni ("do not interact if") criteria is pointless and bêtise

maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but having dni criteria is pointless and...to some degree..unmindful.

the internet is a vast space filled with billions of opinionated, entitled users--most of whom are protected by anonymity. how many of those users do you really think are going to respect, or even acknowledge, your dni criteria?

do you really think whole groups of people are going to avoid interacting with you simply because you said not to in your profile?

in a community that is so boundless and anarchic, no one user is important--and neither is their futile need to maintain their echo chamber.

postscript:

my intention is not to be condescending...i am simply just sharing my opinion on an action i come across all the time on platforms such as this.

don't really agree with this?

most people dont even follow their own DNIs. i'm speaking from experience, it is surprisingly common for someone to add me while i match a (very visible) opinion/age/identity they have listed on a DNI.
and any of the more justified stuff i see on DNI lists would be grounds for a site ban anyway.

i agree that putting stuff like "homophobes/racists dni" is stupid, because of COURSE they're not going to listen. however i think stuff like "minors/adults dni" or "xxx fans dni" makes more sense, and is actually beneficial since the people it's referring to wouldn't try to interact out of pure malice. since neither of those things are harmful by default, but rather just a personal preference, it makes sense to share them

its just etiquette. i dont care if they're lengthy, they're there for a reason. yeah i know it wont stop people specially on twitter, but its usually about a follow basis

you make a good point about dni being relevant as it pertains to follower maintenance! i hadn't considered that...

however, i believe it is the responsibility of the account owner to maintain who follows them and this can be done without putting the responsibility on strangers who may come across your account.

i see your point though!

lol i do know that, but usually people who put that are either kids or just new to the concept; i myself use dni to say away from minors, radfems, etc

but yeah its the account owner who should curate their online experience but sometimes its easier to say it beforehand. some people have "dni fujos" in their bio, and since im a fujo i wont interact, even though i thought the person was cool at first. its just setting a boundary. sincerely, i respect it even if its just stupid sometimes (like the fujo example)
