Last Meals

A condemned prisoner's last meal is a customary ritual preceding execution. In many countries, the prisoner may, within reason, select what the last meal will be.

Documented Last Meals

Susanna Margaretha Brandt

Crime: Murder

Location & Time: Germany 1772

Execution: Decapitation by sword

Meal: A glass of water

Notes: Brandt was previously offered a feast consiting of three pounds of bratwurst, ten pounds of beef, six pounds of baked carp, twelve pounds of veal roast, soup, cabbage, bread, an unspecified dessert and eight litres of wine. She rejected the meal which was instead eaten by officials.

Amrozi & Huda bin Abdul Haq

Crime: Terrorism

Location & Time: Indonesia 2008

Execution: Firing Squad

Meal: Roti canai and chips made from Indian three-leaved yam

Notes: The two were brothers, and shared the same last meal, which was provided by their family

Crime: Proxy murder

Location & Time: California 2006

Execution: Lethal Injection

Meal: Buffalo steak, frybread, Kentucky Fried Chicken, sugar-free pecan pie, sugar-free black walnut ice cream, and whole milk

Notes:  He let the ice-cream thaw out for an hour and turned it into a milkshake by hand

Execution: Lethal Injection 

Meal: Declined a special meal

Notes: Shared two philly cheesesteak sandwiches, a bag of chips, two Dr. Pepper sodas, one bag of M&M's and an almond Hershey bar with two attorneys and three friends before the execution
