"Couples See Man-Sized Bird ... Creature ... Something"
The Mothman is a humanoid creature reportedly first seen in the Point Pleasant area on November 15, 1966. The very first newspaper report was published in the "Point Pleasant Register", dated November 16, 1966, titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird ... Creature ... Something".
One November night two couples consisting of Roger and Linda Scarberry And Steve and Mary Mallette were driving together along State Route 62, near a "TNT area", the site of a former World War 2 munitions plant when they spotted a horrifying looking man, creature, thing. It was over 7 feet tall and was shambling around in the dark, it had piercing red eyes that were almost hypnotizing and as they realized some strange beast was in front of them panic set in, they sped of as fast as they could but the creature gave chase, as it rose up out of the air like a helicopter and sped off after the car, They drove towards town as the monster screeched and glided night to the care easily reaching the cars speeds of up to a hundred miles an hour. Though the creature didn't follow into the town, he stopped sometime before and retreated into the woods.
Moth mans Appearance varies slightly from story to story but is generally the same each time, hes been described as a number of colors ranging from brown to black to white and grey. His height and wing span stays roughly the same in between 6 and 10 feet tall and for wingspan its generally 10-13 feet and his eyes are always large and red (note: in the very first sighting his eyes were only described as red when the light hit them) hes described with a more owl like appearance rather than moth like and he seems to be scared away from light rather than attracted to it as stated by Steve Mallette "it apparently is afraid of light,"
During the next few days, other people claimed to have seen similar things, after the local newspaper had reported on it. Two similar firemen who claimed to have seen it said it was a "large bird with red eyes". Mason county Sheriff George Johnson said that he believes the sightings were due to an unusually large heron, a heron is a bird with a wing span between 3 and 7 feet depending on the species, no species of heron has ever been recorded to live in west point though. Another possibly explanation is the fact he could have been a sandhill crane who may have wondered out of its migration route, which caused it to go unrecognized at the time. The sandhill crane is a very large bird with a wing span of up to 7ft and height wise they can reach as tall as the average man.
The mythical moth creature was described as a "slender, muscular man." by Linda Scarberry, his full description was a large humanoid man with white wings and large glowing eyes, with wings" Scarberry stated she didnt get a good look at his face do to his hypnotizing eyes
