Picking a Team

It’s funny, the people who are obsessed with ‘support your dad’s team’ are the same people who give me hassle for supporting a team cos my dad loves them too & suggested them. Well, it was good advice so I followed it.

My own advice is just: go with your gut. Support a team that makes you feel good on AND off the pitch. Off the pitch is most important: pick a fanbase you feel good being around. I’ve heard ‘pick your local’ but nobody I knew actually did that until I moved in 2003. Instead the pressure was ‘support the same team as other kids in school’/’support the team that everyone locally likes’… well that changed after I moved so eh blood’s thicker than water.

On the pitch shouldn’t really matter as much. It’s a bonus to be racking up silverware but yeah, you do have to be comfortable with the hard times too. Who would you be OK with supporting even if they lost every game? That’s the one your heart is with. If your heart is happy from victories? Good, there’s enough hardship in life without having a hobby adding to it. But it never lasts forever to be honest.

Anyway, I am glad that dad gave me the advice he did. And if I had a kid I’d advise the same (the one caveat I’d have to the dad advice is 1 no you don’t really have to & 2 make it neutral so if you’re my kid ask me 😉 - y’know if your mum is really into it & your dad doesn’t care less don’t be sexist!)

But you’re not my kid. So… my advice is simple as: let your heart decide! You kinda know anyway because it’s who you end up rooting for on an emotional level!
