cocteau twins (and deftones)

i love cocteau twins and specifically how hauntingly beautiful elizabeth fraser's voice is, and how she can make me feel something in the very soles of my feet to the very peak of my skull. my favorite song by CT has to be i wear your ring, the outro is probably the best piece of music ever written. how its able to mean everything but nothing at all as most of their songs do. at first i would only appreciate them on a surface level of their most popular songs like sea, swallow me, or heaven or las vegas, which i still adore, but im happy i branched out to soak in all their otherllow Me beautiful pieces. but at some point i actually wanted to make sense of the seemingly nonsensical lyrics, so i looked up the words and saw it was gonna be a little tricky to learn the actual lines to the songs since the sentences to start mid sentence, or miss context, or trail off with no intention on finishing them. and i love every second of it. when you're so stuck on the meaning of something and trying to understand what it means, i think its great to just think of it like cocteau twins lyrics, if it was easily understandable you would've gotten it by now on you're own, so it's best to just search for your own meaning in everything since you're the only one experiencing things from your perspective. but other rare times the english in their songs are incredibly comprehensible, and that doesnt take away from the experience of their other songs, meaning they had a mastery of knowing how, when, and where, to be coherent to the everyday person. in pur you get such an incredible sense of undying, unwavering, and unconditional love coming from the speaker, the words she is saying and how she says them give you the sense this person will never run at the sight of rocking, turbulent times, and that feelings of anger, sadness, and other negative emotions are only part of what it means to love someone so dearly and to hold onto them in the way a mother and daughter should. the way a father and son should. how a boyfriend and girlfriend should. how a human being should care and love and appreciate another human for who they are and how they navigate in the world.

now i love pretty much every genre of music and will give anything at least a few chances, maybe itll be a few years in between each chance but ill come back around eventually lol. and i used to have biases and resentments towards artists who had certain types of fanbases or were only really popular because of trends or social media. but when i learned that i can enjoy music that other people like and that music isnt bad just because its being treated like a fad, as long as you vibe with the music there should be nothing stopping you from tuning into whatever whenever. so i started listening to any n everything i gravitated towards; since i started out mainly listening to pop music i mainly just circled the edge of it never really adventuring very far out, but still having the odd outlier of metal or hard rock because it stood out to me (there was also a bit of trap/hip hop but MAINLY i was listening to pop). then i started to listen to bands like linkin park and pierce the veil and they opened my eyes to stuff more like pop punk (which isnt THAT far off from other stuffed i was hearing, but there wasnt too much screaming before lol). then i heard loathe's is it really you and i finally understood where peoples heads were at when listening to this kind of music. i feel like another pretty big catalyst of launching me into that kind of industrial, loud, grating, alt. rock, angsty, grungy kinda music was mitski. and ill make her a separate blog post so ill make this brief, but songs like a loving feeling and drunk walk home really setting the stage for me to fully embrace differency in people's discography. and from loathe and mitski, came my extreme love for deftones. its sort of weird the order i started listening to them in, mitski -> loathe -> deftones, since a lot of people only credit loathe as a deftones clone, but deftones and chino marino himself have come out to show their support for them as their own band so i dont understand that critique really. anyway, my favorite song by deftones is probably xerces honestly  wax and wane. which brings me back to CT. deftones covering a CT song really brought everything together for me. i often love covers more than the orginal (unless i'd already liked the og band more (obviously)), but i think they both have something unique to share with their separate interpretations. cocteau twins has the vocals and overall eerie feel to it. deftones brings the drums and more harsh feel to it that really only they could. they were both pioneers in their genres and its hard to fit either of them really into a box like it is with a lot of other artists. the main takeaway from this is that i love these two artist groups and how they were able to shape the music that came after them, they did an amazing job at setting the stage for those who came after them and deserved all the success they got from it.
