writers note: Before I start this essay, I'm going to provide my usual warning; This is completely opinionated and you have every right to put your views in the replies section. I'm aware this isn't music nor movies, but it's a trend that bothers me quite some bit. With that out of the way, enjoy
Minimalism is the idea of "less is more". It's a simple lifestyle that values life instead of materialism. But I don't agree with this sentiment, allow me to explain. Art isn't pointless. Someone who has 30 posters on their walls, colorful furniture, unique patterns isn't meaningless. It's a way of showing their character, making their house into a home. It's a visual example of the life they live and their personalities.
I don't like the trend of clean white and beige empty homes. They don't have any unique designs, it's all the same cookie cutter box shape. It feels like more of a doctors office than somewhere that humans live.
The main argument I've seen for why minimalism is so popular is because simplicity lets people live fulfilling lives. What? What the hell does that have anything to do with living a fulfilling life? When I think of a simple life, I think of times before modern technology. And during those times, unique complex architecture still existed? In fact, it thrived. I suppose maybe people mean that because their homes are so bland, it allows them to focus on the beauty of life. Like....???? How does character take away from your ability to enjoy life? I'd understand hoarding, yes, but colorful patterns and vintage wood working?
And look, this wouldn't bother me that much if it was a small group of people. If it were just a few people who enjoy living in the house from Lab Rats, I wouldn't even be writing this. But it's the majority of homes and buildings now. Of course, some are more extreme than others. But it feels like every neighborhood is following this minimalist trend to some extent. I would just buy an older house if people didn't rip up the vintage wood working and pop out the stained glass windows.
It's not just architecture either, it's clothing and toys too. Bland cream, beige, grays. The design (if any) is just as simplistic and the toys are made of colorless wood. You want the hot pink unicorn shirt? Sorry sweetie, it doesn't fit mommy's aesthetic. I find it simply absurd, laughable even. You're paying more money for less stuff? How is that enjoying life to the fullest? It's an elitist scam only achievable if you're rich. You aren't better than people who have decor in their home. Sorry it doesn't "kindle joy" but being alone and empty doesn't make me kindle joy either.
Anyways...........

For the record: people who have minimalist homes have a character they want to portray themselves as through an aesthetic. That's fine by me, but I don't get WANTING to be perceived as a snobby, pretentious narcissist.

Real. Plus children need colors to develop emotional intelligence, emotional regulation, stimulate their senses, and for their vision, and these minimalists keep bringing up the too many colors argument as if muted colors don't exist. Also aesthetically clutter, pictures up on the walls and colors look better.

Well, my lifestyle is for sure anything else than minimalism, though I like the aesthetics. I once resided in a hotel in Berlin that's interior was held in Japanese minimalism. The suite I had was beautiful and didn't lack of anything you need
What about minimalism in music? There is a lot of cool stuff out there...

The episode "Throw It Away" from Family Guy perfectly sums up how shitty modern minimalism is and how absolutely insane, uncreative, and narcissistic its followers are.

Same. It looks very stupid and very boring.
Also, whenever I see anything minimalist (in the modern sense), I get a strong urge to paint it in vibrant colors. I don't understand how anybody could tolerate or even like the blandness of it.
