AOTD #1 : Small Steps, Heavy Hooves

hi yall! im going to start posting an album every day from my collection that i want to share.

today's album of the day is Small Steps, Heavy Hooves by Dear and the Headlights!

since this is my first aotd i wouldn't want to commemorate the occasion with anything other than my favorite album of all time! dear and the headlights are a very important band to me, i've been listening to them for years and have desperately been trying to dig up and preserve all of their unreleased content. my fixation with them started with this album, specifically the track Sweet Talk, which i knew long before i fully "discovered" them!

the highlights of this album to me are its colorful & unique lyricism. metzger's lyrics are full of nostalgic imagery; bringing up feelings of missing a playful, sunshine filled childhood. between the warm tones of his clean singing and his high, emotional wailing, it's hard to ignore the way each song tugs at your heart strings and really gets you feeling for simpler times.

my personal favorite track on the album is Skinned Knees & Gapped Teeth, which encompasses all of the above; a song telling the story of the days of VHS tapes, Teddy Ruxpin, bloody hand-me-downs and childlike injuries. the reminiscent imagery mixed with the fun vibe of the song & metzger's vocal delivery really makes it feel like you're living that life again.
