Just Like Heaven - The Cure

So I used to run a blog in Ye Olde Covid times, and I'm thinking of deleting it and moving it here. I'd rather do things casually and have fun talking about music again. I think moving it on here would help. So I will. My Blog was called GothMoth, thanks to an old friend. I hope you enjoy it.

I thought I would start with a song that I love a lot haha. I could possibly even call it a favourite, though I have too many favourites. Plus I hope other people will know this song and if not, I can share my love for it. I have had a love for The Cure since I turned 14 and had an 80s phase, with the first song of theirs I heard being Love Cats. I would always listen to Love Cats on repeat, but now I find it hard to listen to as I listened to it so much back then. Their music spoke to me, a little weird, a little dark, and for me, perfect. I have always had a passion for darker things and tend to listen to more obscure music. Probably my 2nd generation Goth showing, haha. Just Like Heaven was on The Cure's 1987 album Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. It is an excellent album, by the way. Though the guitar only has 4 chords in the song, it has a catchy beat. Plus with the steady drumbeat, it just gets your head moving. With the use of the keyboard and synths to accentuate Robert Smith's vocals, the song becomes the perfect union for the lyrics and tones within the song. None of the components of the song drowns the others out; they all find balance within it. The song's rhythm immediately makes me want to dance like Mary (Robert Smith's wife) in the music video for Just Like Heaven and puts me in an excellent mood. To me, this song is super romantic with the lines 'I promise I'll run away with you.' and 'won't you ever know that I'm in love with you.' The song later has a sad turn of events when Smith finds himself 'alone above the raging sea.' The sadness expressed by the loss of his beloved, it almost reminds me of Mary Shelley and Percy Shelley. The lyrics make it feel hauntingly dreamlike, I suppose the usual way for people to explain their feelings of love. Exciting, new and dreamlike. Along with the song comes a beautiful music video accentuating that feeling. Mary and Robert
