Imagine it like being in a city. There's several hundred thousand people but most of them will never see you or know you exist. Then there's a much smaller but still big number of people who will pass you by on the street, maybe go "huh I wonder what that person's life is like" and then move on. And then there's just a handful of people who you'll run into and actually meet and interact with, maybe even see regularly for a while or become actual friends with!
