I'm thinking about how mean a lot of media has been in my teen/adult life. It started with The Weakest Link and Pop Idol. Went on all the way to internet bickering behind a screen on social media. I don't like it. I don't think it's really part of being a grown up - in fact we'd be better off leaving it in the yard of secondary school where we argued cos we were too old for playtime but had been put out in the cold.
I'd rather TV shows realised they had the duty of care to be nice to people. Or just neutral. Not find it 'entertaining' to be mean all the time.
This stuff can have lethal consequences like with Jeremy Kyle and the man who killed himself after going on the show.
And I'd rather social media was like that, too. Old web values. If you don't have anything nice to say & all that. Or like it says on the comment section on here 'be nice'.
So much media is fuelled by anger or just a general desire to mock. This blog post is actually another fuelled by negativity (although more fuelled by upset tbh). We need more stuff that's fuelled by kindness, optimism & the things that make us smile, instead.
