it is of my opinion that if you watch neon genesis evangelion you should also watch revolutionary girl utena and and serial experiments lain (altho perhaps utena-first ppl dont need to complete the trifecta) i think the three shows have an interesting synnergy despite their differing themes. however the truth of the matter is that many NGE watchers do not have the type of open heart for utena and the same goes for lain watchers but like, its not open in a different way. also i believe madoka magica watchers should watch utena and princess tutu, but once again there are many madoka watchers i do not trust with this duty.

you know there is something that goes in common in all these series that you've mentioned, the conception of escapism. you conclude eventually that you must never run away, which is a common basis of these animes, especially Utena and Eva. Lain is all about connection though, i don't know if it fits in the against escapism theme.
