Science and Luck: Chapter 1

Bennett

I woke and sat up with a jolt as I heard my best friend’s voice drifting through the garage of our shared house.

“Benny! I just had the best idea!” I lowly cursed when I hit my head on an overhanging light. I quickly stood from my chair and turned it around, placing my hands on the back of it. As soon as Scarlet came around the corner I launched the chair at her, the seat hitting her knees.

“Seriously, why do you do this?” She gave me a blank look and I laughed.

“You woke me up, it’s only fair.” I blew a raspberry at her and crossed my arms, turning my body away from her. She rolled my chair back over to me, placing it behind me and pushing the seat against the back of my knees so I fell backward, right into the chair.

“You should really sleep in your room, only the Gods know what sleeping here is doing to your back.” I nodded in agreement and turned to a random gadget on my desk, pretending that was what I had been doing.

“Yea, but I’m a busy man. I don’t have much time to sleep. Anyways, you said something about an idea?” I slightly cocked my head in her direction without looking at her.

“Oh yeah! So I met this guy David, great guy by the way he’s on our couch, and we started talking about stuff and he brought up the fact that this area is kinda, you know, lawless? I think that’s the word... Anyways, I was thinking maybe we could make a new country with laws and a name and stuff like that.” I discarded the gadget and turned to the dark-skinned redhead.

“Okay, I have three things to say about that whole thing you spewed at me. 1, since when was it safe to invite random people you just met into your home, 2, this seems like a good idea and I can help machinery-wise. And 3, we have a couch?”
