The Harpy Eagle
Harpia harpyja
Harpy eagles are incredibly large birds. Their body length can range from 89 to 102 cm, and their wing span is a whopping 2 meters! Females are usually larger than the males.
Harpy eagles will keep a mate for life, and are monogamous. They will begin to breed in spring and rainy seasons. Once they breed, the female will lay 1-2 eggs. If 2 eggs are laid, the parents will neglect the second egg and only feed the first one born. Both parents will devote a lot of time caring for the baby chick, like hunting for food to feed it.
Harpy eagles are very skilled hunters. They hunt during the day and can perch for up to 23 hours in search of prey. These birds actually have no natural predators in their habitats, and are at the top of the food chain.
Harpy eagles are listed as "least concern" when it comes to their endangerment. They are actually very helpful for the environment, keeping other animal populations in check.
