Simple answer: Not wierd at all, and yes they are usable! You shouldn't judge someone by their phone...
Tbh from my experience it's really not that bad. For those who are sick of spending so much time on modern social media like Instagram, Snapchat and oh god, TikTok.
I've been using old phones (Samsung sgh-x800 and now Nokia N95 8gb) since summer 2022 starting with the samsung one. Ofc you can't expect all the features that we have on the modern smartphones, duh. But you still have the basic everyday things that you use like internet which is kinda limited but not useless, email (not gmail tho, since old phones has old TLS and SSL idk what is it called, so gmail is not supported. On the other hand Zohomail.com which is surprisingly good worked on my smasung, but not on my nokia for some reason so i had to make new email), calling and texting. I even got working VOIP/SIP calling on my nokia thanks to sip2sip which is free calling to the same SIP provider (sip2sip.info), so that's cool. You can even have Instant messenger! I currently use jabber with talkonaut (I created account at jabberix.com), but your friends have to create jabber account too. And so far so good! The only downside is that you can't send photos, but you can send them by email.
I can talk about few more things but you get the idea. Old phones are usable! Tho I kinda wish AN would create SpaceHey IM client for symbian or java.
Thanks for reading!

I wouldn't recommend it to everyone but if you're willing to buy an old (cute) phone and if you'll get used to it i think you won't regret it! Cuz for some stuff that can't run on this phone you have your pc.
