Kirby Anime Episode 16 Sub and Dub Comparison.

Been a while, but let's get back into it!

This is not one of my favorite episodes. It's just weird and awkward, but I think it's definitely intentional. The episode is about Kine the fish falling in love with Fumu (Tiff) and wanting her to be his girlfriend. Fumu is shocked and refuses because she lives on the land and Kine lives in the sea. While this is happening, Dedede is searching for the hidden Rainbow Coral Reef to build his new undersea castle and overhears Fumu and Kine. Dedede and Escargoon offer Kine a chance to be with Fumu if he reveals the secret location of the Rainbow Coral Reef. Hijinx ensues when Kine goes on a date with Fumu and gets into all kinds of trouble. He finally realizes the difficulty of living on land, but wonders why Dedede wants the location of the Coral Reef when he's a land dweller as well. This tips Fumu, Bun (Tuff), and Kirby into Dedede's new scheme. The episode ends with a battle under the sea and we get our first new ability in a while, Tornado Kirby. The reef is saved, and Kine apologizes to Fumu, says his goodbye, and swims off.

It's a pretty silly episode, but the English dub is slightly sillier. I think the main thing is that Fumu is underaged, though it's hard to say how old Kine is supposed to be, but let's say they're similar in age. I know this is a show for kids, but it would have been nice if the lesson of no means no is taught early for children. A lot of freakin' adults can't grasp the concept of no means no. Kine wants to date Fumu, and she's clearly uncomfortable with it, but still goes along with the date after Dedede and Escargoon construct a mobile fish tank for Kine. Though it is funny that the show also pokes fun at Fumu for acting like going on a date with Kine doesn't bother her when she thought there was no way it can happen. Again, it is a kids' show, so it's not offensive by any means, but Kine being so insistent on things made this more awkward. This mirrors real adults who think they can have their way if they keep trying when it comes to romance and relationships. A missed opportunity to teach this to kids IMO.

As for the sub and dub differences, I really didn't notice any big differences. I couldn't spot any cuts or censorship, and if there are cuts, they might have shaved a few split seconds off the show. I can't say I noticed anything different. Just that there are more fish puns in the English version, and Bun is more savage in the dub. A few of the new jokes are pretty funny. The submarine joke between Dedede and Escargoon is better in the Japanese version.
