Possible Trek Stories

Yeah, Star Trek Discovery...   I was really hoping we'd see how the federation deals with prison and reform after I saw an officer commit mutiny, kill a dude, and start a war. But nope, it's just more or less ignored and swept aside.  But you know what I want? On top of that classic standard of a liberal utopia and the machinery that solves problems and keep the federation going (That's starfleet), I want to know more about everything else.

What does Earth do with everyone that's NOT starfleet? What's religion on Earth look like after we discover Q? Or the prophets? Or any of the other handful of god-like monster-of-the-week that enterprise encountered.

What happens to planets that want to join the federation, but can't quiiiiite adhere to federation rules? How about that one island full of idiots that want to break away from the federation (and then get pissed that they can't vacation in Risa)?

I want spy-hunters digging around for Romulan spies. I want social workers shielding refugees seeking alsylum from Klingon slave-worlds. I want an outbreak of replicating toasters in the research lab trying to thwart Borg tech. I want philosophers waging metaphorical war over the implications of Q existing. I want smugglers providing predatory sapiosexuals with pon far juice.

And outside that utopian society, I want to know how homeworlds are handled in the Romulan and Klingon Empires. They have huge swaths of territory. You know there's other races in there. Are they genocided? enslaved? Suffer as second class citizens? Simply taxed and protected?

There's plenty of stories you can make in a functional well organized society. Too many writers are just lazy and make everything dysfunctional to create bullshit drama where it doesn't need to be.

And just because the Federation is functional and competant and a good meritocracy, there are problems that are TOO BIG for the federation just simply solve.  Namely other major political players: The empires, the borg, the Q, and all the little guys whom they simply don't want to crush. You can make plenty of stories about federation captains just struggling to "play fair".
