there are gonna be spoilers in this so! if you plan on reading the book, i suggest you avoid this post.
i found running out of time while looking for a new book to read, it was a children's novel but the premise sounded interesting so i decided to read it!
a quick summary before i start talking about it: the book is about a girl called jessie, who supposedly lives in a village during the late 1800's. her siblings and friends get sick and the medicine theyre given stops working, which is when her mother decides to tell her about how theyve been living in a "museum" and were on display for people to watch 24/7 (later, it turns out it was actually a fucked up experiment done to find the "strongest" gene pool and save humanity, and the museum was just a cover)
reading it took me about 3 hours (?), and honestly most of the book just felt like filler. jessie seemed much younger than she actually was, but in a way it works since she went from living in the late 1800's to finding out her whole life was a lie and it was actually 1995. another thing that pissed me off is she wasn't really likable either; the way she interacts with everything around her portrays her as naive and clueless, and not in a way you'd expect an actual 13 year old to act, no matter what century they grew up in.
some of the parts were very repetitive (mentioning how brave she was, saying "the 20th century" in almost every other page, etc.), and the fact that the parents kept them there knowing it was all an experiment then being given custody of the kids a few months after theyve been rescued made no sense .. if you wanted to go with that then why give them the whole foster home arc. it just doesnt fit in with the rest of the story.
my thoughts are all over the place but i just really wanted to talk about this book, it wouldve been a lot better if it were written well, but the book just sucked.
3/10 because the idea was good, but the execution ruined it. :]
