cephalopod of the day: pharoah cuttlefish

the pharaoh cuttlefish (sepia pharaonis) is a species of cuttlefish found in the western pacific ocean and the indian ocean. It is named after the pharaohs of ancient egypt because of the distinctive black and white striped patterns on its body, which resemble the headdresses worn by the pharaohs !

the pharaoh cuttlefish is a carnivorous species, feeding on small crustaceans, fish, and other cuttlefish. it uses its tentacles to catch its prey and then uses its beak-like mouth to chop it up into smaller pieces. it has a unique way of hunting its prey: it can change the color and pattern of its skin to blend in with the background, and then it can suddenly flash bright colors and patterns to startle and distract its prey, making it easier to catch.

the pharaoh cuttlefish is found in tropical and subtropical waters, usually at depths of 10 to 50 meters (33 to 164 feet). it is a solitary species, living and hunting alone. sadly,, its not a very long-lived species, with a lifespan of only about 1 to 2 years.

ps: i will be editing all of my blogs to add a little more info on some of those lacking cephalopods! you guys deserve a quality blog
